Traditional town festival centered around the Vogtland Sperk legend
When the stages are set up on the first weekend of July, the festival beer wagon rolls, and the first notes of regional bands drift across the market square, everyone in Oelsnitz knows: it's Sperkenfest. For three days, the upper Vogtland celebrates its town festival—families, clubs, merchants, and restaurateurs transform the Oelsnitz city center into a lively meeting place for locals and guests from the entire region.
The festival is named after an old Vogtland folk legend about the 'Oelsnitz Sperk', which is firmly anchored in the city's collective memory. The festival celebrates this local identity—and it is traditional for even the Minister President of the Free State of Saxony, if his schedule permits, to offer a few words of greeting to the people of Oelsnitz.
Regional and national artists and bands perform on the stages. Between concerts, a colorful market attracts numerous traders from near and far: crafts, regional specialties, Vogtland cuisine, and local beers. For the youngest visitors, there are numerous children's activities, carousels, and hands-on stations.
Oelsnitz is located in the Vogtland district, in the extreme southwest of Saxony, on the border with Bavaria and the Czech Republic. The city is known for its lace production and Voigtsberg Castle. Visitors to the Sperkenfest should plan a detour to the historic old town and the Schlossberg—or to the nearby Pirk dam and the upper Vogtland region.
The 2026 Sperkenfest will be celebrated on the first weekend of July—as every year. Regional and national artists and bands will perform on the stages in Oelsnitz's city center; the market will attract traders from all over the Vogtland, offering Vogtland specialties and local beers. Children's activities and carousels are planned for families. A detailed program will be published shortly before the festival on the official website.
The detailed 2026 program will be published on sperkenfest.de. General structure:
Regional and national artists will perform on the stages; between concerts, there will be Vogtland cuisine, local beers, and craft stalls.
