About Spamalot Augsburg
Spamalot Augsburg — edition 2026
With the premiere on June 27, 2026, the Staatstheater Augsburg opens its first open-air season on the new Gaswerk summer stage in Oberhausen. Until July 31, 2026, "Monty Python's Spamalot" is on the programme – the musical about King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and the search for the Holy Grail, full of absurd British humour.
Anna Weber is responsible for the production, and Sebastiaan van Yperen is the musical director. Performances take place against the industrial backdrop of the historic Gaswerk, as the Red Gate open-air stage is being renovated due to structural defects. The new stage has the same performance area as the previous Red Gate stage and offers around 1,200 covered grandstand seats, as well as catering around the performances.

The Knights of the Coconut Conquer the Gaswerk
The summer open-air musical of the Staatstheater Augsburg is one of the highlights of the Augsburg summer. In 2026, it experiences a historic move: As the Red Gate open-air stage requires fundamental renovation due to structural defects, the season will be performed for the first time on the new Gaswerk summer stage in the Oberhausen district – on the festival grounds between the Reinigerhaus and the Scheibengasbehälter, with the same stage area as the previous Red Gate stage.
Monty Python on Stage
The programme features "Monty Python's Spamalot" – the musical written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez, which brings the Arthurian legend and the cult film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" to the stage in anything but a classic manner. King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table set out to find the Holy Grail, stumbling through a parody full of absurd British humour. The direction is by Anna Weber, and the musical direction is by Sebastiaan van Yperen.
New Stage, Lavish Production
The Gaswerk summer stage offers around 1,200 covered grandstand seats and an elaborate, opulent production. Around the performances, catering provides a summer theatre atmosphere against the striking industrial backdrop of the historic Augsburg Gaswerk.
