About Späth'sches Traditionsfest

The Späth'sches Traditionsfest celebrates the birthday of Berlin's oldest manufacturing company every year — the Späth'sche Baumschulen (nurseries) were founded in 1720. For one weekend in September, the historic grounds in Berlin-Baumschulenweg are transformed into a plant market, an autumn festival, and a family experience. Over two days, there is a Green Market with a dahlia show and pumpkin exhibition, carriage rides, fairy tale theatre (Monbijou Theater), archery, apple tastings, live music, and a stage program with the foundation's founder Christoph Späth as rhyme speaker (Theo Theodor). Admission €8, reduced €5, children up to 16 free.

306 Years of Berlin Horticulture History

In 1720, around 100 years before the founding of the German Empire and 285 years before reunification, Christoph Späth founded the present-day nursery in Berlin. It is Berlin's oldest manufacturing company, operated without interruption since the 18th century. In 2026, the company will celebrate its 306th birthday — and the annual Traditionsfest is the company's largest event.

What you will find on the grounds

The festival grounds cover a good 50 hectares and resemble a botanical park with sales operations. During the Traditionsfest, the historic halls, fields, and the carp pond open up:

  • Green Market: Plant vendors, gardening advice, sale of perennials, shrubs, fruit trees, seeds
  • Dahlia Show and Pumpkin Exhibition: Hundreds of dahlia varieties in full bloom, plus monumental pumpkins from our own cultivation
  • Apple Tasting and Fruit Variety Identification in the historic warehouse — bring an unknown apple from your garden and have it identified by the pomologists
  • New Community Orchard and field lab — insights into current plant cultivation research
  • Fairy Tale Biotope at the Carp Pond: the Monbijou Theater performs fairy tales for children
  • Carriage Rides across the nursery grounds
  • Live Music and stage program with "Christoph Späth" (Theo Theodor) as the rhyming company founder with anecdotes

For Families

The festival is explicitly family-oriented. Children up to 16 years old have free admission, and there are craft activities with natural materials and an archery range in the "House of Trees". Carriage rides and fairy tale performances do not cost extra.

Baumschulenweg and Treptow-Köpenick

The Späth'sche Baumschulen are located in the Baumschulenweg district of Treptow-Köpenick — and the district owes its name directly to the company. From a historical perspective, the festival is therefore not just a plant market, but a district festival: the district was co-created here. The Treptow-Köpenick district is considered Berlin's greenest, and a day at Späth's is a good start for a walk along the Britzer Zweigkanal or to the nearby Treptower Park.
