About Sonnwendfeier Oedheim

On June 20th and 21st, 2026, the Liederkranz Oedheim invites you to the traditional Sonnwendfeier (Midsummer bonfire festival) on the Säukies festival meadow (Säukiesweg). Two days of traditional festival celebrating the summer solstice with a large bonfire in the evening, choir singing by the Liederkranz choir, catering with Swabian cuisine and draft beer, and convivial gathering until late at night. Oedheim, located in the Heilbronn district at the lower reaches of the Kocher river, preserves an old folk custom with the Sonnwendfeier, which originally ritually accompanied the summer solstice.

Summer Solstice — Ancient Custom

The summer solstice around June 21st marks the longest day of the year and the astronomical start of summer. In many Central European cultures, this day has been celebrated since antiquity with fire rituals: solstice bonfires were lit on hills and squares to celebrate the sun in its most powerful phase and simultaneously symbolically mark the transition to the decreasing length of daylight. In Southern Germany and the Alps, solstice bonfires remain a vibrant custom to this day, especially in Alpine regions and in villages and associations that preserve the tradition.

Liederkranz Oedheim as Guardian of Tradition

In Oedheim, the Liederkranz choir has been the custodian of the Sonnwendfeier for decades. The association, which combines musical cultivation and Swabian folk tradition, organizes the two-day festival together with friendly associations in the community. The program combines the classic element of the Sonnwendfeier — the bonfire at night — with a convivial, family-friendly festival setting.

Säukies Festival Meadow

The venue is the Säukies festival meadow on Säukiesweg, a traditional festival ground on the outskirts of Oedheim. The name "Säukies" comes from the Swabian dialect and refers to an older plot of land. The meadow offers ample space for a large bonfire, beer benches, a stage for the Liederkranz, and catering stands. Its rural location on the edge of the village makes the Sonnwendfeier a relaxed, nature-oriented experience.

Two-Day Program

The festival runs all day on Saturday, June 20th, 2026 — afternoon program with a cake stand, evening festival program with a performance by the Liederkranz choir, the big solstice bonfire after dark, followed by a convivial gathering until late at night. On Sunday, June 21st, 2026 (official day of the summer solstice), a quieter program will take place with a morning pint, lunch, and winding down in the afternoon.

Liederkranz Choir and Swabian Song Culture

The Liederkranz choir cultivates the Swabian and Southern German song repertoire — from classical folk songs and sacred choral works to modern pop arrangements. During the solstice evening, the singers perform a program specifically suited to the occasion: summer solstice songs, songs about the solstice, and joint singing sessions with the audience.

Oedheim in the Heilbronn District

Oedheim is located in the Heilbronn district on the lower reaches of the Kocher river, on the border with Bad Friedrichshall and in close proximity to the salt mine. With around 6,000 inhabitants, the municipality is small but has a strong association life, characterized by scattered orchards, vineyards, and a long tradition as a saltworks town. The Sonnwendfeier is one of the most vibrant traditional events in the annual festival calendar.

Sonnwendfeier 2026 at Säukies Festival Meadow

The 2026 edition continues the Oedheim Midsummer tradition. The Liederkranz choir, together with friendly associations, organizes a two-day folk festival celebrating the astronomical start of summer with a bonfire, singing, and convivial gathering.

The highlight is Saturday evening: After dark (around 9:30 PM), the large solstice bonfire will be lit, the Liederkranz choir will accompany the ritual with summer solstice songs and Swabian folk songs, and the audience will gather on the meadow around the fire.
