Traditional Sonnenwendfeuer (Midsummer bonfire) for the summer solstice in Jagel
Jagel is a small municipality in the Schleswig-Flensburg district (Schleswig-Holstein), located southwest of Schleswig on the A7 motorway. With around 1,700 inhabitants, the nearby Jagel Air Base (Eggebek-Jagel Airfield) and the agricultural surroundings shape the village's appearance. The municipality belongs to the Amt Arensharde.
Sonnenwendfeuer (also called Johannisfeuer) are a very old tradition in many European regions, especially in the Alpine region and in Northern Germany. They are lit on the night of the summer solstice or on St. John's Day (June 24 — the birthday of John the Baptist). Symbolically, they welcome the longest day of the year — and at the same time the fact that the days will be shorter from now on. In the Frisian-Nordic region, there is an additional rural tradition: the connection to agriculture, to the season, to communal village life.
Today, Sonnenwendfeuer are not major tourist events, but local traditions that foster the self-understanding of village communities. In Jagel — as in many other small communities in the Schleswig-Flensburg district — families, clubs, and individuals gather to celebrate the astronomical start of summer together. It is an event without a show character, without admission fees, without spectacular program items — and precisely for this reason, it is authentic. Those who visit the Sonnenwendfeuer Jagel experience a piece of lived tradition in rural Schleswig-Holstein.
The Sonnenwendfeuer 2026 in Jagel will take place on June 20, 2026, from 6:00 PM — on the eve of the astronomical summer solstice. The municipality of Jagel organizes the traditional bonfire as a meeting point for the village community. Catering by local clubs, a simple program around the fire, and convivial gatherings during the long summer days characterize the evening.
