Three days of German wine in Krefeld's city center — at Joseph-Beuys-Platz with live music and Flammkuchen
Krefeld is known more for silk and industrial culture — but in summer, wine arrives. The Krefeld Wine Festival is a relatively young event that has become a firm fixture in the Krefeld summer calendar in recent years. The organizer is the Bürgergesellschaft Stadtmitte e.V., a local association that keeps the city center vibrant with events. Venue: the Joseph-Beuys-Platz / Karlsplatz in Krefeld's city center.
The square between Karlsplatz and Joseph-Beuys-Platz is just a few steps from Krefeld City Hall — a central location that makes the wine festival a classic downtown summer meeting point. For three days, wine, food, and stage areas are set up, and the square fills with hundreds of visitors at peak times. Unlike a commercial festival, the Krefeld Wine Festival has a neighborhood character: regulars, residents, and Krefeld families dominate the audience.
At several stands, German wines are served in small and large portions — Riesling, Spätburgunder, Weißburgunder, Grauburgunder, sometimes seasonal specialties like Federweißer (if the season is right). Accompanied by food that pairs well with wine:
A small stage on the square offers live concerts over the three days. The repertoire is broad: singer-songwriters, local cover bands, jazz combos, acoustic sets. Unlike at large festivals, the bands here are on eye level with the audience — no VIP pyrotechnics, but relaxed summer music to a glass of wine.
An explicitly declared mission of the organizers: the revitalization of the city center in summer. Krefeld, like many German medium-sized cities, suffers from structural change in its downtown area, with vacant retail spaces and declining foot traffic. The wine festival is a contribution against this: a concrete format that brings people back to the city center, combined with a clear culinary experience.
The wine festival is free to enter. Wine and food are paid for directly at the stands — usually with tokens purchased centrally. This unbureaucratic form makes the wine festival a typical neighborhood event with a low entry barrier.
