What to Wear?
Colorful, rainbow-colored, glitter, feathers — Pride thrives on style. If you prefer something more understated, you are also welcome — the message counts, not the costume. Sun protection, sturdy footwear for the demonstration (several kilometers).
With Family?
The CSD is explicitly family-friendly — children are welcome. The stage program later in the evening may become louder and less suitable for young children.
Tip
If you want to capture the energy of the Crefelder CSD: be there at Platz der Wiedervereinigung at 12 PM, march in the demonstration, and then enjoy the stage program at Theaterplatz from 4 PM. Visibility is the message — the more people, the stronger the signal.
Pride in the Lower Rhine — the Crefelder CSD
The Crefelder CSD — Christopher Street Day is the annual demonstration and Pride event of the queer community in Krefeld. The event is held under the motto “Krefeld is COLORFUL — Sexuality has no color” and demands visibility, equality, and protection from discrimination for lesbian, gay, bi, trans, intersex, queer, asexual, and non-binary people. The organizer is the registered association Crefelder CSD e.V.
August 15, 2026 — The Day's Schedule
12:00 PM — Rally at Platz der Wiedervereinigung
The day starts at 12 PM at Platz der Wiedervereinigung with an opening rally: music, speeches by activists, introduction of the associations and organizations participating in the CSD. A relaxed atmosphere for the first part of the program — families and first-time visitors are welcome.
Approx. 2:00 PM — Demonstration through the City Center
After the speeches, the demonstration begins and proceeds through Krefeld's city center. Colorful floats, dance groups, drag performers, and participants with rainbow flags — the demonstration makes a loud statement and demands visibility. Thousands of people line the route and celebrate along.
4:00 PM — Stage Program at Theaterplatz
Starting at 4 PM, the grand stage program begins at Theaterplatz: live music from various genres, drag performances, speeches, dance acts, and community encounters. Food trucks and drink stands are available on the sidelines. The program continues into the late evening, often with a closing party afterward.
The Motto — “Krefeld is COLORFUL”
Behind the Crefelder CSD lies a clear political message: Krefeld as a diverse, open city where all identities have a place. The demands include:
- Protection from discrimination in school, work, and daily life
- Recognition of trans, intersex, and non-binary people
- Educational work in schools and social institutions
- Visibility of Krefeld's queer history (KG Rosa Jecken, Karneval, and queer tradition)
- Solidarity with LGBTQIA+ in countries where they face persecution
Krefeld's Queer History
The queer community in Krefeld has a special connection to the local Karneval: Carnival clubs like the KG Rosa Jecken and individual queer carnival personalities have contributed to local tolerance over decades and to the development of the CSD movement in Krefeld. This connection between Rhenish Karneval and queer culture is a hallmark that distinguishes the Crefelder CSD from other CSDs.
Crefelder CSD e.V. — The Association
Crefelder CSD e.V. was founded to organizationally support the annual Pride event and to carry out queer visibility work in Krefeld year-round. The association seeks members, volunteers, and donations to finance and expand the CSD events. Engagement is also welcome without membership — many Krefeld residents spontaneously help out on the CSD day.
Growing Format in the Lower Rhine
The Crefelder CSD is among the younger but growing CSDs in NRW. The city, with around 230,000 inhabitants, the famous Theater Krefeld, and a vibrant alternative culture (Fabrik Heeder, Kulturfabrik), provides fertile ground for a modern Pride movement. The 5th edition took place in 2024; 2026 will be the seventh or eighth edition — the exact count will be disclosed by the association.
