25 Years of the Middle Ages in Donaueschingen Palace Park
The Knights' Games in Donaueschingen are one of Southern Germany's most renowned and high-quality medieval events. The organizer is Fabula Corvinus, a professional medieval company that has been organizing knight tournaments, medieval markets, and reenactment events in the DACH region for over two decades. Donaueschingen — at the confluence of Brigach and Breg, occasionally marked as the "Source of the Danube" — offers an ideal backdrop with its palace park: vast lawns, old trees, a historic riding stadium that can easily be transformed into a medieval tournament arena. 2026 marks the event's 25th anniversary.
Medieval Market with European Artisans
The medieval market extends through the riding stadium and the surrounding palace park. Over 80 stalls feature taverns with historical cuisine (mead, dark bread, beef and game roasts, soups), European artisans (blacksmiths, saddlers, potters, woodcarvers, bow and arrow makers, leatherworkers, wool processors, glassblowers), vendors of medieval clothing, jewelry, weapons, and replicas, as well as small workshops where visitors can try historical techniques themselves. Alongside these are encampments of various medieval society groups: nobles, burghers, peasants, artisans, minstrels, monks, each with their own portrayal.
Mounted Knight Tournament and Fire Show
The artistic centerpiece of the Knights' Games is the mounted knight tournament, performed by the "Companions of Fire" — a professional reenactment riding group showcasing jousting, sword fights from horseback, tactical maneuvers, and acrobatic equestrian performances. These performances are not exaggeratedly showy like in Hollywood films but focus on historical accuracy and equestrian quality. Tournament times: daily 4:30 PM Main Tournament, Fridays and Saturdays additionally at 8:00 PM the spectacular mounted fire show — riders with torches, fire obstacles, and a choreographed performance that transforms the riding stadium into a dramatic evening arena.
Authentic Medieval Experience
What sets the Knights' Games in Donaueschingen apart from commercialized medieval events is its commitment to authenticity. Fabula Corvinus collaborates with historians and reenactment experts, and exhibitors are required to keep their stalls, clothing, and goods historically consistent (period 1100–1500). Costumed visitors receive an entry discount — a mechanism that enhances the overall visual impression of the event. The result: a medieval market that is not only fun but also conveys real history — a form of "living history" that has a dedicated audience, especially in the DACH region.
