Karolinenhof on Langer See
Karolinenhof is a small residential settlement in Schmöckwitz, Berlin's southernmost district. The area lies between forest and water — Langer See and the Dahme lake chain characterize the surroundings — it has a distinctly village-like character and is predominantly inhabited by owners of a cooperative settlement. The Siedlungsgenossenschaft Karolinenhof e.G. was founded in 2009 after taking over the property and comprises approx. 50 leaseholders.
The Cooperative Festival
The annual summer festival is a classic cooperative format: members organize the festival themselves, each year under a changing theme. In 2026, the theme is "1001 Nights" — an allusion to the collection of Oriental fairy tales with its associated visual aesthetic. Food, drinks, games, program, and decoration are collectively organized by the members. The atmosphere is familial and very untouristy — those who are invited get to see a rarely accessible side of Berlin.
Distinction from other Karolinenhof Festivals
There is also a Siedlergemeinschaft Karolinenhof e.V. in the same district, which organizes its own events. The festival described here is explicitly that of the Siedlungsgenossenschaft e.G. (cooperative form, own property) and not that of the Siedlergemeinschaft e.V. Both are neighborly but organizationally independent.
