Summery brass music festival of the Musikverein-Kuckucksklub at the Schönwald open-air pool — Hochschwarzwald atmosphere at 1,000 meters
The Musikverein-Kuckucksklub (MV-KK) Schönwald is one of the traditional brass music clubs in the Schwarzwald-Baar district. Its annual Sommerfest at the Schönwald open-air pool is a typical Black Forest event: convivial catering at beer tables, regional food, brass music from the German-speaking folk music spectrum, all against the backdrop of the Schönwald basin, located high in the Black Forest.
Schönwald im Schwarzwald is situated at almost 1,000 meters altitude on the Brend in the Hochschwarzwald, Schwarzwald-Baar district. The municipality with just under 2,400 inhabitants is the birthplace of the German mechanical engineering pioneer Reuchlin and is primarily known as a destination for winter sports and summer hiking. The region's cuckoo clock industry is also famous — Schönwald, along with neighboring Schonach, is the center of Black Forest cuckoo clock production, hence the name of the music club (Kuckucksklub).
The Sommerfest takes place on a Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Schönwald open-air pool — an outdoor pool in an idyllic Black Forest setting. You sit outdoors at beer tables amidst fir trees and meadows, with a view of the pool. Musically, there are performances by various brass music clubs from the Schwarzwald-Baar Association throughout the day — usually the host ensemble plus two to three friendly clubs at hourly intervals. Catering is handled by the club itself: bratwurst, steak, Vesper platters, homemade cakes in the afternoon, draft beer, and wine from the Black Forest and surrounding Ortenau region.
Expect a cross-generational Black Forest audience — regulars from Schönwald, Schonach, Triberg, Furtwangen, Vöhrenbach. Expect friendly service in club attire, hearty folk music, and occasionally more modern pieces from the Schlager spectrum. Families with children can swim in the pool (separate admission to the open-air pool) while parents listen to the concert — a typical midsummer Black Forest combination.
The Sommerfest in 2026 follows the established format. MV-KK Schönwald will perform two to three sets during the day, framed by performances from friendly music clubs from the Hochschwarzwald (typically MV Schonach, MV Furtwangen, MV Triberg, MV Königsfeld, etc.). Catering will be continuous with grilled items, Vesper platters, and cakes.
The location at the open-air pool makes the festival family-friendly — parents listen to music and enjoy wine, while children swim in the pool. In warm summer weather — late July at 1,000 meters in the Black Forest often sees temperatures of 18–22 °C, significantly cooler than in the valley — this is an ideal combination.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Open-air pool admission is separate (usually €3–€5). Catering at usual club prices: Bratwurst €4, Vesper platter €7–€9, glass of wine €3, liter of beer €4–€5.
By car via the B 33 (Triberg–Donaueschingen). Schönwald is located about 4 km west of Schonach. By train to Triberg or St. Georgen, then take bus 7270 or a taxi.
Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Admission to the Sommerfest is free. Catering is provided by MV-KK Schönwald at usual club festival prices. Open-air pool admission is separate.
