Traditional Spring Funfair in Rinteln's Historic Old Town
The Maimesse traditionally begins in Rinteln on May 1st, marking the start of the spring funfair season in the Weser Uplands. The combination of classic funfair nostalgia and the medieval old town backdrop with its half-timbered buildings gives the event a special character. Showmen from Lower Saxony and neighboring states travel with their rides and transform the central squares and alleys of the old town into a colorful entertainment mile for four festive days.
The offerings range from traditional chain carousels and Ferris wheels to dodgems and modern thrill rides, as well as children's rides. Food stalls serve bratwurst, fries, candied almonds, crêpes, cotton candy, and gingerbread hearts, along with beer, lemonade, and non-alcoholic refreshments. Market stalls offer sweets, toys, souvenirs, and typical funfair trinkets.
While many funfairs are now relocated to central fairgrounds, the Rintelner Maimesse continues to take place in the historic old town. This concept makes it a particularly attractive form of funfair for many visitors, where urban culture and market tradition harmoniously blend.
The Maimesse runs from Friday, May 1st, to Monday, May 4th, 2026, offering an extended weekend full of festive joy. Families particularly enjoy May 1st and Sunday for extended visits, while Friday and Saturday evenings are dominated by a younger audience.
The 2026 edition continues the proven concept of the Maimesse. The first stalls open on Friday afternoon, followed by the official opening in the evening. Throughout the weekend, all rides and stalls are in operation. Monday concludes the festival with a relaxed end to the festivities.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Showmen with rides (Ferris wheel, dodgems, children's carousels, thrill rides), market stalls (toys, sweets, handicrafts), and food stalls (bratwurst, fries, crêpes, candied almonds, cotton candy).
