Neighborhood festival of the Margarethenhöhe community on the Kleiner Markt in Essen's heritage-listed garden city on June 20, 2026
The Margarethenhöhe in southern Essen is among Germany's internationally best-known model housing estates. Founder Margarethe Krupp commissioned architect Georg Metzendorf in 1906 — shortly after the death of her husband Friedrich Alfred Krupp — to build an exemplary garden city for Krupp workers and employees. Between 1909 and 1938, over 3,000 apartments in terraced, semi-detached, and small apartment buildings were constructed on an area of around 50 hectares, structured by narrow streets, small squares, and green spaces. Today, the entire Margarethenhöhe is a listed monument — and with its historic fountains, the central market square, the Gothic-looking market church, and the brick and plaster facades, it resembles a living architectural museum.
The venue for the Summer Festival is the Kleiner Markt — a central, intimate square in the heart of the garden city, lined with small shops, a café, and the famous fountain. This square is not a "city center" in the sense of a main train station forecourt, but an intimate hub of neighborhood life — and that's precisely what makes the Summer Festival special: not a mega-spectacle, but a neighborhood festival in a unique architectural setting.
The organizer is the Bürgerschaft Margarethenhöhe e.V. — the neighborhood association of Margarethenhöhe, founded to preserve the garden city's identity and foster neighborly relations. Throughout the year, the association organizes summer festivals, Advent concerts, guided tours of the garden city, and regularly seeks volunteers for setup, dismantling, and festival operations. The Summer Festival is their most popular event and a meeting point for both long-time residents of Margarethenhöhe and newcomers.
The exact program for 2026 has not yet been finalized — the event page explicitly states that "all dates are subject to change". Based on previous years, the following can be expected:
Anyone combining the Summer Festival with a neighborhood walk should definitely explore the Steile Straße, the Halbe Höhe, and the Kleiner Markt quarter with its alleys. The Kleine Atelierhaus with changing exhibitions by local artists, the Galerie der Margarethe-Krupp-Stiftung, and the nearby Krupp-Park are further points of interest. The Folkwang Museum (15 min by bus) and the Grugapark grounds are also easily accessible.
