Family festival with bouncy castle, giant slide, and live music at the community center
The Sommerfest at Bürgerzentrum Gahmen is a typical German neighborhood festival – compact, family-oriented, authentic. The venue is the Bürgerzentrum Gahmen at Kümperheide 2, the central meeting point in the Lünen district. Every year on the first Saturday in September, the neighborhood management and the City of Lünen organize a family festival here, traditionally starting at 2 PM and lasting until after dark.
The program explicitly targets families with young and middle-sized children. The focus is on hands-on activities: bouncy castle, giant slide, face painting, button maker, giant Connect Four. A special attraction is the rickshaw rides around the community center – an established mobility service in Gahmen that connects volunteers with seniors and children.
From the late afternoon onwards, the atmosphere changes: a live band plays on the stage in the inner courtyard or in front of the community center. In previous years, the band Portal Formidable performed – a cover project playing well-known songs for a relaxed vibe. The band selection for 2026 will be communicated directly by the City of Lünen or the community center.
The catering is organized in a community-friendly and neighborhood-focused manner: waffles, coffee, and cake for the afternoon, plus grilled sausages and Turkish specialties – reflecting the multicultural structure of the Gahmen neighborhood. The community center's kiosk offers cold drinks. Free admission, food and drinks at community-friendly prices.
Lünen, with around 86,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the Kreis Unna district, located at the transition from the Ruhr area to the Münsterland region on the Lippe River. Gahmen is one of its twelve districts, situated in the south of the city – a neighborhood with a mining heritage and active community work. The community center has been a cornerstone of social life for years, and the Sommerfest is its most visible public event.
The Sommerfest is largely supported by volunteer helpers organized by the community center, the neighborhood office, and the City of Lünen. This defines its character: not a commercial event, but tangible neighborhood work.
The 2026 edition traditionally falls on the first Saturday in September. The program and format are based on the previous year, with a focus on families and the neighborhood community. The exact band program and detailed list of hands-on activities will be communicated by the City of Lünen shortly before the event.
