Over 35 years of Sunday concerts under the open sky in Neukölln's jewel park
Körnerpark in Neukölln-Nord is a Berlin anomaly: In just 2.4 hectares, a strictly geometric complex in Neo-Baroque style unfolds – with a cascade fountain, terrace, orangery, and gallery. Completed in 1916, the park is a deliberate statement: it was intended to provide a recreational oasis for the bourgeoisie in the sand and gravel extraction area of Neukölln. Over a hundred years later, it is one of Berlin's most intimate open-air spaces. The concert series 'Sommer im Park' has been held here since the late 1980s.
The motto 'Music for All' is programmatic: Admission is free, there is no obligation to purchase anything, and the audience reflects the social diversity of the Neukölln district. Stylistically, the program covers a wide range: Flamenco guitar ensembles from Andalusia, jazz trios with female pianists from Berlin, rock bands from the Schillerkiez, classical string quartets, Afrobeats-oriented crossover projects. Four concerts per season in Körnerpark, with additional dates held at other locations in the district.
Körnerpark is located in Schillerkiez, one of Berlin's most densely populated neighborhoods. Those attending the concert almost always stop by one of the cafés on Selchower Straße or at the Turkish snack bar on Hermannstraße beforehand. Schierker Straße itself is a quiet cross street, at the end of which the park appears like a surprise – a contrast to the Kreuzberg hustle and bustle just a few U-Bahn stops away.
For 2026, the Neukölln cultural department is expanding the format: after four classic Sunday concerts in Körnerpark, additional dates will follow on the roof of the Kulturbunker in Britz and in the park at Ritterburgspielplatz in Rudow. This means 'Sommer im Park' will now reach neighborhoods beyond the S-Bahn ring – a logical step for one of Berlin's most successful summer cultural formats.
The 2026 season expands the format with additional locations in Britz and Rudow. At the classic venue, the terrace in front of the gallery in Körnerpark, the format remains unchanged: four concerts on Sundays at 6 PM, curated by the cultural department of the Neukölln district office.
