Wine market and open-air festival at Großer Teich — Season finale in the Altenburger Land
The park at Großer Teich is the green heart of Altenburg — a historically developed parkland with old trees, a lake, and pavilion architecture, stretching south of the old town. In early September, it hosts a weekend wine market: pavilions and stalls line the lake, vintners from several German wine-growing regions serve their wines, and street food stands offer regional specialties. A small open-air stage alternates between live music (jazz, soul, singer-songwriter, cover bands) and DJ sets. The atmosphere is familiar, not touristy — a city festival for Altenburg residents and their neighbors.
The Altenburg Wine Festival is a fixed event in 2026 within the regional cultural summer concept «DEIN Sommer-Moment», under which the Altenburger Land district office bundles several festivals and open-air events. The idea: to stage the Altenburger Land — the easternmost part of Thuringia on the border with Saxony — as a cultural stage. In addition to the Wine Festival, the Gößnitz Open Air, the Meuselwitz Stadthausfete, the Borna City Anniversary, and several village festivals are part of the network.
Anyone spending a day in Altenburg will find more than enough to do between wine tastings. The Skat city is the inventor and playing location of Germany's most famous card game — the Playing Card Museum in the castle showcases its history. The Residential Castle (Residenzschloss) towers over the city, and the Lindenau Museum boasts an outstanding collection of early Italian panel paintings. Altenburg is located in the Altenburger Land district in the state of Thuringia, on the border with Saxony. The A4 motorway (Erfurt–Dresden) is just a few kilometers away.
The Wine Festival runs from Thursday to Sunday. Thursday evening kicks off with an opening wine tasting; Friday and Saturday are the main visitor days with stage programs until late at night; Sunday sees the festival wind down in a relaxed manner, often with jazz or acoustic music at sunset by the lake. Tables and benches are set up, but you can also bring a blanket and sit on the grass — the park invites you to linger.
The Altenburg Wine Festival 2026 runs from September 3 to 6 in the park at Großer Teich. Four days of wine market with vintners from Saale-Unstrut, Pfalz, Mosel, and Baden, live music on an open-air stage, street food stalls, and a cozy atmosphere by the lakeside.
Thursday evening opening wine tasting, Friday and Saturday main program with stage music until late, Sunday relaxed conclusion with acoustic music at sunset.
The updated stage program will be published shortly before the festival on altenburgerland.de and in the «DEIN Sommer-Moment» cultural summer flyer.
