Getting There

By train: Altenburg station on the Mitteldeutsche Regiobahn (Leipzig–Hof / Chemnitz–Leipzig), about a 15-minute walk from the station to the park. By car: A4 Erfurt–Dresden, exit Schmölln, then federal road to Altenburg. Parking is signposted on the outskirts of the city.

Free. Wines and food are paid for on-site — many vintners offer tasting packages, often with a tasting glass.

Tip

The park at Großer Teich is the green heart of Altenburg — a historically developed parkland with old trees, a lake, and pavilion architecture, stretching south of the old town. The Altenburg Wine Festival is a fixed event in 2026 within the regional cultural summer concept «DEIN Sommer-Moment», under which the Altenburger Land district office bundles several festivals and open-air events. The idea: to stage the Altenburger Land — the easternmost part of Thuringia on the border with Saxony — as a cultural stage. In addition to the Wine Festival, the Gößnitz Open Air, the Meuselwitz Stadthausfete, the Borna City Anniversary, and several village festivals are part of the network.

Altenburg — Skat, Castle, and Playing Card Museum

Anyone spending a day in Altenburg will find more than enough to do between wine tastings. The Skat city is the inventor and playing location of Germany's most famous card game — the Playing Card Museum in the castle showcases its history. The Residential Castle (Residenzschloss) towers over the city, and the Lindenau Museum boasts an outstanding collection of early Italian panel paintings. Altenburg is located in the Altenburger Land district in the state of Thuringia, on the border with Saxony. The A4 motorway (Erfurt–Dresden) is just a few kilometers away.
