Multi-day Games Festival in the Park am Großen Teich — Altenburg, the Skat capital, celebrates its 1050th anniversary in 2026 with a festive Sunday and Skat flash mob
Every late summer, the Altenburg Games Festival transforms the Park am Großen Teich into an open playground. For three days, everything revolves around analog and digital games: XXL games on the lawn, board game demos in pavilions, a VR arena with virtual reality stations, sound channels as a sound installation, and hands-on activities for all ages. Admission: free.
In 2026, the festival coincides with the grand 1,050th anniversary of Altenburg. The festive Sunday on August 23rd is dedicated to the anniversary — the highlight being a Skat flash mob with 1,050 Altenburg residents. Skat clubs and restaurateurs are organizing the largest simultaneous Skat round in the city's history. Additionally, there will be a parade of clubs and schools from the market square to the park, and an Island Zoo Festival on Saturday with animal feedings and club stands.
The Festival Express — a shuttle bus — connects the two festival areas, Baderei (by the Großer Teich) and Park. The VR Arena showcases current virtual reality games and multiplayer experiences; XXL versions of classic board games like "Mensch ärgere dich nicht" (Ludo) and chess invite participation. Sound channels — interactive acoustic sculptures — bridge art and play. A stage in the park provides the festival atmosphere with live music and DJ sets; chill-out lounges offer relaxation between activities.
Altenburg is the district town of Altenburger Land (in the state of Thuringia) and is considered the quintessential Skat city — the famous card game was invented here in 1813. With the Playing Card Museum, the annual Skat World Championship, and the planned Yosephinum Player Experience Center, the city is consistently expanding this DNA. The Games Festival is part of this strategy — a mix of tradition (Skat) and future (VR, sound channels).
In 2026, the annual Games Festival and the 1050th anniversary of Altenburg merge. Three days of festival with a special festive Sunday program, the city's traditional Skat DNA, and an ambitious range of games from analog to virtual. Free admission, festival express between Park am Großen Teich and Baderei.
