39 days of free open-air stage at Dortmunder U
Sommer am U is one of the most beautiful free festivals in the Ruhr area. From June 3 to August 28, 2026, the Leonie-Reygers-Terrasse — the spacious forecourt of the Dortmunder U — will transform into an open-air stage. On 39 days (Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays), the program alternates between concerts, DJ sets, poetry slams, and readings.
The programming comes from 25 local cultural organizers, each curating individual days. This creates a rare diversity: one Wednesday might feature an indie concert, Friday a punk show, and Sunday a poetry slam with a family brunch. The genres range from indie, pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, and punk to spoken word and experimental formats.
In 2026, the Dortmunder U-Tower turns 100. The high-rise building from 1926 — originally the brewing house of the Dortmunder Union brewery and now a prominent landmark with its striking nine-meter-high U — will have its central anniversary event within the festival with the birthday celebration on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Further highlights:
All events are free of charge, and the forecourt remains publicly accessible. Up to 10,000 visitors attend the largest events. The organizing team implements explicit rules of conduct and an awareness team, recognizable in vests, who are available to address experiences of discrimination or boundary violations. This makes Sommer am U a safe open-air stage for everyone.
The Dortmunder U is not just a festival stage but one of the most important art and cultural centers in the Ruhr area. The former brewery high-rise houses the Museum Ostwall, the Hartware MedienKunstVerein, the ICEM (interdisciplinary center), and the U-Kino. The striking illuminated U on the roof changes its LED animations daily. The high-rise shapes the skyline of Dortmund's city center (independent city in North Rhine-Westphalia).
Sommer am U 2026 will take place on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday evenings throughout the summer. Different organizers each evening, different genres — a true variety of programming with an awareness concept and free admission.
