Summer neighborhood festival in the Silberhöhe forest settlement in Halle
Silberhöhe — also known as "Waldstadt Silberhöhe" — is a large housing estate in the south of Halle (Saale), built in 1979 in the GDR prefabricated construction style. Since reunification, the district has transformed radically: deconstruction, afforestation, a new identity as a green "Waldstadt" (forest settlement). The "Menschen für Menschen" (People for People) Neighborhood Festival is the district's annual self-affirmation — by residents for residents, supported by the Silberhöhe Citizens' Initiative.
Stands, a stage, and hands-on activities are spread around the E-Center on Weißenfelser/Silbertaler Straße. Clubs, housing associations (HWG, GWG), political parties, and the Southern District Management present their work. Live performances by local dance groups, choirs, and bands take place on stage — a distinctly community-oriented tone, far from a tourist program. The Mayor of Halle traditionally attends the opening.
Halle (Saale), with around 240,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Silberhöhe is located in the south, in the 06128 postal code area. Visitors to the neighborhood festival get to know a different side of the Handel city than the tourist center with its Marktkirche and Burg Giebichenstein — a deliberately local, participatory event with a focus on neighborhood work.
The "Menschen für Menschen" (People for People) Neighborhood Festival will likely take place in 2026 on the last weekend of June — the date based on experience from previous years. Residents of Silberhöhe, clubs, and housing associations present themselves in an open format.
The festival is the result of neighborhood work: the Silberhöhe Citizens' Initiative, the City of Halle (Saale), the Southern District Management, and the housing associations (HWG, GWG) act together as organizers — HWF also provides annual financial support.
