Hückelhoven brummt! — the municipal Volksfest in the Wassenberg region
When late summer arrives in the Lower Rhine town of Hückelhoven, the city center comes alive with a completely different rhythm for three days: From September 4th to 6th, 2026, the City-Fest "Hückelhoven brummt!" will take place — the annual city festival organized by the City Marketing Department. Concerts, artisans, a dedicated children's experience world, and Sunday shopping bring the full spectrum of a compact city festival to the central axis between the town hall and the shopping streets.
Program — Concerts, Arts & Crafts, and Children's World
The program structure of the City-Fest has been proven for years:
- Stage Program — Concerts of various genres and cover bands (exact lineup to be announced early summer 2026)
- Arts and Crafts Mile — Stalls around the town hall featuring local craftspeople, jewelry designers, pottery, wood, and textile art
- Children's Experience World — Dedicated area with games, hands-on activities, carousel rides, and face painting
- Gastronomy and Food Stalls — Bratwurst, fries, regional specialties, crêpes, drink stands
- Sunday Shopping Sept 6th from 1 PM to 6 PM
Event Start at 8 PM — the Evening Focus
The program starts at 8 PM on the main evenings — the City-Fest consciously focuses on an evening highlight, drawing families after work, professionals after their workday, and young people into the city center. During the day, the market with artisan stalls and food is open; in the evening, the stages come alive, and the atmosphere reaches its peak.
Sunday Shopping — the Commercial Climax
The highlight of the city festival strategy is the Sunday shopping on September 6th, 2026, from 1 PM to 6 PM. Hückelhoven's city center retailers open their doors, and the stroll seamlessly leads into the festival grounds — a deliberate fusion of city festival and shopping experience, which has become standard in many medium-sized NRW towns.
Hückelhoven — A City in Structural Change in the Heinsberg Region
The medium-sized town of Hückelhoven, with around 38,000 inhabitants, is located in the Heinsberg district in western North Rhine-Westphalia, on the border with the Netherlands. For decades, Hückelhoven was shaped by hard coal mining (Sophia-Jacoba shaft, until 1997). After the end of mining, a massive structural transformation took place — today, medium-sized industry and services characterize the town. City Marketing strategically uses the City-Fest to profile the city center as an experience and shopping destination against competition from Heinsberg, Wassenberg, and the nearby Dutch town of Roermond.
City Marketing as Organizer
The organizer is the City Marketing Department of Hückelhoven, coordinated by Carsten Forg in the municipal office for Culture and City Marketing. A setup typical for many smaller NRW towns: the city festival is not purely a cultural event but part of a location strategy that combines retail, gastronomy, and municipal visibility.
