Schützentheater — Heart of the Biberach Schützenfest
The Biberach Schützenfest has been documented since 1668 and is one of the oldest and largest local festivals in Southern Germany. Unlike many comparable festivals, the Children's and Youth Theatre plays a central role: the Stiftung Schützendirektion regularly stages major fairy tale and family plays with elaborate productions, original music, and many young performers from the city's schools. The Schützentheater offers an independent series of performances in rhythm with the Schützenfest.
Aladin and the Wonderful Lamp — The Story
The play tells the story of the classic Oriental fairy tale character Aladin: a poor boy, a runaway princess, a magic lamp with a genie who grants three wishes — adventures of enchantment, betrayal, and rescue. In 2026, Yvonne von Borstel-Hawor has revised the 2009 version (written with Hermann Maier) and tailored it for a tighter dramaturgy: 2 × 45 minutes of playing time with a 20-minute intermission. Ideal for children from primary school age, perfect for families.
Music by Andreas Winter
Composer Andreas Winter has written an original musical score specifically for this production — songs, interludes, and orchestral passages. Live music accompanies the stage action and gives the play its distinct character, much closer to musical theatre than pure drama. The songs are also hummed after the performances — an experienced outcome from previous productions.
Ensemble and Stage
The Schützentheater features actors, singers, and dancers from Biberach schools as well as experienced adult performers. This is one of its unique features: children performing for children. Elaborate costumes, grand sets, lighting effects, special effects surrounding the magic lamp and the genie.
Stadthalle Biberach
The Stadthalle Biberach at Theaterstraße 6 seats around 700 spectators in fixed seats — comfortable viewing from all rows, good acoustics, air-conditioned hall even on hot summer days. Over five weeks, there are several performance dates on weekends, and during school holidays, sometimes also on weekdays.
Biberach an der Riß — Home of the Schützenfest
The town of Biberach an der Riß (AGS 08426, Biberach district) with its approximately 33,000 inhabitants is the economic and cultural centre of Upper Swabia. It is known for its historic Schützenfest (annually in mid-July), its pharmaceutical centre (Boehringer Ingelheim), and its well-preserved old town with a market square and town hall. The Schützentheater is the cultural companion to the local festival and an independent crowd-puller.
Why Go
For families with children, the Schützentheater Biberach is one of the best theatre events in Southern Germany during the summer: elaborate production, original music, grand stage, well-known story, children as main actors. For adults, it's an authentic experience of one of Upper Swabia's most vibrant local and theatre scenes.
