Schützenfest at the Northern Edge of the Harz
The Schützenfest Schmatzfeld belongs to the traditional world of North-Central German Schützenfeste – that grown form of the village summer festival, where the shooting club not only cultivates its own hobby but also acts as the organizer of a festival for the entire village. Three days of festivities from Friday to Sunday, with central program points: king's shooting, parade through the district, ceremony, dance evening, and morning pint, all catered by the club.
Anyone visiting Schmatzfeld for the first time should know: the village is small, but the shooting club is active and very well organized. The festival has the characteristic charm of these village summer formats, which are firmly rooted in the region between Magdeburg and the Harz Mountains: without tourist staging, but all the more authentic for it.
Schmatzfeld is a district of the Nordharz municipality in the Harz district, state of Saxony-Anhalt. The municipality is located on the northern edge of the Harz Mountains, in close proximity to Halberstadt, Wernigerode, and Quedlinburg. Those in the region can easily combine the Schützenfest with a weekend hike in the Harz.
