Four-day Schützenfest and Kirmes festival from July 24 to 27, 2026, in the Neuss districts of Speck and Wehl
Neuss, with around 153,000 inhabitants, is the district town of the Rhein-Kreis Neuss (Düsseldorf administrative district), located on the left bank of the Lower Rhine opposite Düsseldorf. The city is known beyond the region for the Neusser Schützenfest (end of August, one of the largest Schützenfeste in Europe with over 7,000 participants). In addition, the individual districts of Neuss have their own smaller Schützenfeste — one of them is the Schützenfest in Speck and Wehl.
The two districts of Speck and Wehl are located in the south of Neuss, on the border with the Rhein-Kreis Neuss-Landstrich. Despite their manageable population, both districts have a strong identity and a lively club life. The Kirmesgesellschaft Speck-Wehl e.V., based at Hermann-Cossmann-Straße 29, has been the hub of the annual Schützenfest and Kirmes since 1948.
The festival was founded in 1948 shortly after the end of the war — as a sign of returning normality and community life in the districts. Since then, it has taken place annually, with only short interruptions due to the Corona pandemic in 2020/21. The 78th edition in 2026 continues this tradition.
The program follows the Rhenish Schützenfest canon: assembly of the marksmen at the festival tent, celebratory church service, grand parade with marksmen's companies, marching bands, and the royal dynasty, proclamation of the king or bird shooting, dance evenings with live bands or DJs, Kirmes with amusement rides and food stalls. Over four days, a dense program unfolds — Thursday or Friday with the opening, Saturday the grand evening event, Sunday with the parade and royal ball, Monday or Tuesday bird shooting or closing evening.
The Schützenfest season in the Rhein-Kreis Neuss runs from May to October — over 80 districts, suburbs, and villages celebrate their own Schützenfest annually. The Speck-Wehl festival fits into this diversity. Those who want to get a taste of several can find the full overview in the NE-WS 89.4 Schützenfest calendar.
The Kirmes complements the festival — smaller amusement rides (children's carousel, shooting gallery, throwing booth, food trucks) create the popular atmosphere. Families from the districts and surrounding areas come together repeatedly over the four days — the festival grounds are a meeting point for generations.
The 2026 edition follows the proven Rhenish Schützenfest format: four days from Friday to Monday with assembly, parade, king proclamation, and dance evenings. The Kirmesgesellschaft Speck-Wehl e.V. is the organizer and coordinates the program with the City of Neuss and district associations.
The detailed program and parade route map will be published in advance on the Kirmesgesellschaft's channels.
