First city festival of the year with a spring theme
"Gütersloh blüht auf" is the official spring city festival of the city of Gütersloh and the first of four Sundays with open shops of the year in the city. In 2026, the festival will take place on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The event traditionally marks the start of the early spring city center season and ushers in the series of Gütersloh city festivals.
The concept revolves around the blooming spring. The central Berliner Platz will be transformed into a sea of flowers — with spring market stalls, floral arrangements, and planting decorations. A pop-up playground for children will be set up on Kolbeplatz, and creative activities and workshops will be spread along Berliner Straße — the main shopping street.
The family program focuses on hands-on activities with a spring theme:
In parallel with the city festival, the Gütersloh city center shops will be open. Confirmed participants include H&M, Jack & Jones, dm, Woolworth, and Liberty. This makes the day a complete shopping and family outing — and Gütersloh reports growing visitor numbers from the neighboring cities of Bielefeld and Paderborn.
Gütersloh, with around 102,000 inhabitants, is the largest city in the district of the same name, Kreis Gütersloh, in the eastern Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia. Known as the home of Bertelsmann and Miele, the city has a distinct economic structure that is reflected in its lively city center events. The four Sundays with open shops and several city festivals per year (spring festival, summer festival, autumn and Advent markets) make Gütersloh a regional shopping and event center.
Five hours of spring atmosphere in the Gütersloh city center. Berliner Platz becomes a blooming stage, Kolbeplatz and Berliner Straße complement it with a playground and workshops. In parallel, the city center shops open for the first Sunday shopping event of 2026.
