On Sunday, March 22, 2026, Gütersloh opens its spring city festival and the first Sunday shopping event of the year with "Gütersloh blüht auf". From 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Berliner Platz will be transformed into a flower-filled spring landscape with creative activities for children, workshops on Easter decorations and planting pots, and a district rally. The city center shops (H&M, Jack & Jones, dm, Woolworth, Liberty, and many more) will be open. For the first time, the festival is attracting more and more visitors from Bielefeld and Paderborn.

Getting there

By train: ICE/IC to Gütersloh Hbf, then a 5-minute walk to Berliner Platz. By car: A2 exit Gütersloh, then follow signs for the city center.

Opening hours

City festival 1:00 PM–6:00 PM. Shops with Sunday opening hours usually also 1:00 PM–6:00 PM.

Tip

The planting pot workshop for children is particularly popular — arrive early. Those arriving by train arrive directly at Berliner Platz. The next Sunday with open shops in Gütersloh usually takes place in April.

The first city festival of the year

"Gütersloh blüht auf" is the official spring city festival of the city of Gütersloh and the first of four Sundays with open shops of the year in the city. In 2026, the festival will take place on Sunday, March 22, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The event traditionally marks the start of the early spring city center season and ushers in the series of Gütersloh city festivals.

Sea of flowers at Berliner Platz

The concept revolves around the blooming spring. The central Berliner Platz will be transformed into a sea of flowers — with spring market stalls, floral arrangements, and planting decorations. A pop-up playground for children will be set up on Kolbeplatz, and creative activities and workshops will be spread along Berliner Straße — the main shopping street.
