Grand Autumn City Festival in Gütersloh — Michaeliskirmes, Street Performers and more
The Michaeliswoche is the largest autumn festival event in Gütersloh and derives its name from Michaelistag (September 29) — the traditional harvest and farmer's holiday in the Catholic calendar. For about ten days from late September to early October, Gütersloh's city center transforms into a multi-layered festival area with a funfair, street art, markets, and cultural activities.
The exact date for 2026 will be published by Gütersloh Marketing and the Verkehrsverein Gütersloh in the summer of 2026. Based on experience, the Michaeliswoche includes the last weekend of September and the first weekend of October — in 2025, it ran from September 26 to October 5.
A traditional funfair is set up on the Marktplatz (market square) with colorful rides, carousels, and food stalls — for all age groups, from children's carousels to roller coasters.
A street artist festival on Berliner Platz and Kolbeplatz: acrobats, comedians, jugglers, and performers take over public spaces. Free admission, voluntary donations appreciated.
A flea market exclusively for children in Spiekergasse — they sell discarded toys and discover their entrepreneurial talent.
Live demonstrations by blacksmiths, woodcraftsmen, and other traditional trades — perhaps the most unusual element of the festival.
Open-air film screening in a central square — free admission, a cultural and communicative atmosphere.
At least one Sunday during the Michaeliswoche is a late-night shopping day: Gütersloh's shops open their doors, complementing the festival program and showing appreciation to local customers.
The organizers are Gütersloh Marketing GmbH and the Verkehrsverein Gütersloh. The concept is deliberately polycentric: instead of a single main square, the program points are spread across several locations — Marktplatz, Berliner Platz, Kolbeplatz, Spiekergasse — so that the entire city center participates in the festival.
The city of Gütersloh (around 102,000 inhabitants) is located in the Gütersloh district in Ostwestfalen-Lippe (North Rhine-Westphalia). It is the headquarters of international corporations such as Bertelsmann and Miele, making it an important economic hub. The city combines this economic strength with active cultural and club work — the Michaeliswoche is proof of this.
Ten festival days with a funfair, street art, markets, and children's activities — spread across several squares in Gütersloh's city center. Marktplatz, Berliner Platz, Kolbeplatz, and Spiekergasse together become the festival backdrop.
Free admission. Rides and food/drinks priced daily. Street artist donations welcome.
