Three-day medieval spectacle in the historic castle courtyard of Penkun
Penkun Castle in the small town of the same name in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district is one of the last surviving castles of the Pomeranian dukes. The von der Schulenburg family had the Renaissance building erected at the end of the 15th century. It is precisely this historic site that forms the backdrop for the Medieval Festival at Penkun Castle: Once a year, the Middle Ages return to the castle courtyard.
For three days, a colorful medieval hustle and bustle comes alive in the castle courtyard. Knights and brave warriors, cheerful jesters, and minstrels shape the events. The secret star is the legendary dragon Faffmir — an impressive figure that particularly amazes the youngest visitors. Craftspeople in authentic guild clothing bring camp life to life, demonstrate old techniques, and tell stories of everyday life in past times.
The Penkun Medieval Festival is deliberately designed to be family-friendly. Children from 0 to 14 years have free admission, so families can enjoy the spectacle without worry. Over the years, the festival has become a firm fixture in the region's event calendar — thousands flock to Penkun to experience knights and dragons.
With the Medieval Festival, Penkun underscores its historical significance. The town in the far southeast of Vorpommern preserves a cultural heritage with its castle that reaches far back into Pomeranian history. The festival combines authentic medieval flair with the special atmosphere of a real historic castle courtyard.
From March 20 to 22, 2026, the courtyard of Penkun Castle will be transformed into a vibrant medieval world for the fifth time. The musical accompaniment will be provided by well-known groups such as Turas Math, Sack und Pacc, and Duo Obscurum with flutes, lutes, and historical instruments. In the evening, the fire show Infinity will illuminate the sky above the castle with a newly created program.
