Traditional three-day Schützenfest in the Müllenbach district of the Marienheide municipality
Müllenbach is one of the eleven districts of the Marienheide municipality in the Oberbergischer Kreis. The local marksmen's association maintains a central piece of tradition for this rural district with its annual Schützenfest on the last weekend of July. The 2026 event runs from Saturday, July 25th to Monday, July 27th, 2026 — three days of festivities centered around the Schützenplatz (marksmen's square).
The marksmen's tradition in the Oberbergischer Kreis has deep roots: almost every district maintains its own association with its own patron saint, its own king and queen, and its own flag delegation. The Müllenbach Schützenfest fits into this dense network of associations and underscores the identity of the district within the Marienheide municipality. Friendly brotherhoods from neighboring towns participate in the parade, contributing to the grand picture of this tradition.
As with most Schützenfeste in the Oberbergischer Kreis, the program is spread over three days: Saturday kicks off with an opening at the Schützenplatz and a dance evening in the marquee. Sunday features the traditional grand parade through Müllenbach with all companies and friendly associations, followed by a morning pint (Frühschoppen) and the king's shooting — whoever shoots the last wooden figure off the bird becomes the marksmen's king. Monday is Family Day and the festival's conclusion.
Marienheide is a municipality with around 13,000 inhabitants in the northeastern Oberbergischer Kreis. The Müllenbach district is located in the hilly landscape of the Bergisches Land, overlooking the Brucher reservoir. The region is characterized by forests, meadows, and village club culture — the Schützenfest is one of the most important social events of the summer.
