Anniversary run for the 40th birthday — 11,000 runners and 30,000 spectators in the city center
The Braunschweiger Nachtlauf was initiated in 1986 by MTV Braunschweig von 1847 e.V. and has since developed into one of Germany's largest and most atmospheric city runs. With 40 years of history, it is one of the oldest events of its kind in the German-speaking world. The concept has been simple and brilliant from the start: running late in the evening, through the illuminated city center, in a unique atmosphere that combines sport and urban culture.
The dimensions of the night run are impressive: Around 11,000 runners are expected at the start, and approximately 30,000 spectators line the route, creating an atmosphere that few runs in Germany can offer with such intensity. The city center with its large squares, the Bohlweg as the start and finish area, and its accessibility on foot make the run a major social event. Families, colleagues, groups of friends, and clubs form teams and run together.
With eight different distances — from the 500-meter Bambini run for the youngest to school and youth races, the 5-kilometer fun run, the 10-kilometer main race, and the half marathon (21.1 km) — the night run is truly suitable for everyone. Each participant can choose the distance that suits them and find their level. This makes the run not only a competition but also a grassroots sports event in its best form.
The special feature of the Braunschweiger Nachtlauf is the summer night atmosphere. With the start at 7:00 PM and the last runners well after dark, a unique play of lights emerges — illuminated routes, city lights, headlamps of the runners, cheering spectators. The city center becomes a glowing, pulsating organism that combines sport and summer culture in a way that few cities can offer.
Registration is possible online from February 16 to June 14, 2026, via davengo.com or the MTV website. Entry fees vary depending on the distance, with early bird discounts available in the first few weeks. MTV Braunschweig organizes the run with over 800 volunteers, the city's largest volunteer effort for a single sporting event.
