Schützenverein 1844 — three districts, one association
The Schützenverein Lerche-Rottum-Derne 1844 e.V. is over 180 years old — founded in 1844, when the three mentioned villages were still independent farming communities in the Hellweg foreland. Today, Lerche, Rottum, and Derne are districts of the large Westphalian city of Hamm (North Rhine-Westphalia, independent city). Although the incorporation in 1975 ended municipal autonomy, the shooting tradition has been preserved as a unifying element of identity for the three places.
Biennial rhythm
Like many Westphalian shooting associations, Lerche-Rottum-Derne also holds its grand Schützenfest in a biennial rhythm — meaning every two years. 2026, being an even year, is a Schützenfest year. The current royal couple — crowned in the last Schützenfest year — are Markus Schäfer and Sarah Wulf. They will lead the festival weekend and will crown a new couple during the 2026 royal shooting competition.
Haus Keitmann — the shooting association's home
The venue for the Schützenfest is Haus Keitmann in Hamm-Lerche — a restaurant with an attached festival ground, which has served as the association's home and festival hall for decades. The house, with its renovated hall, offers space for the festival tent atmosphere of the three festival days — the royal ball, shooting mass, and association meetings take place here. The adjacent outdoor area is used for the royal procession and the royal shooting competition.
Three days of Schützenfest
The festival program follows the classic Westphalian pattern. Saturday, June 13: Shooting mass and festival opening in the festival tent, assembly of the companies, first royal shooting competition or start of the bird shooting, evening dance party with live band. Sunday, June 14: High mass, followed by a grand royal procession through Lerche-Rottum-Derne with the royal couple and entourage, royal shooting competition or shooting for the bird at the bird pole. Monday, June 15: Coronation of the new majesty, royal ball in the evening, closing festival.
Westphalian shooting tradition
The shooting tradition is deeply rooted in the Westphalian region — alongside Carnival and the parish festival, the Schützenfest is the most important local identity festival. Generations meet, old connections are maintained, and the new king is crowned. In Hamm-Lerche-Rottum-Derne, with its rural residential areas, the Schützenfest 1844 is the defining festival of the three united districts.
