Four days of Münsterland Schützenfest in the Leer district of Horstmar with tent party, King's Shoot, and two King's Balls
The Leer-Haltern Marksmen's Club is one of the traditional rural clubs in the Horstmar municipal area. The district of Leer belongs to the town of Horstmar in the Steinfurt district, nestled in the typical Münsterland park landscape with farms, fields, and quiet avenues. The 2026 Schützenfest runs from Wednesday, May 13th to Saturday, May 16th, 2026 — four days of festivities centered around the tent camp at the Leer festival grounds.
The festival kicks off on Wednesday, May 13th, 2026, starting at 9:00 PM with the tent party: an open dance night in the festival tent with a live band, opening the festival week and building anticipation for the days ahead. The start of a 4-day marathon of Münsterland traditions.
Thursday, May 14th, 2026, is the highlight day. The King's Shoot starts at 2:00 PM — the traditional competition for the title of King. Whoever shoots the last piece off the wooden bird becomes the new marksmen's king of the club. In the evening at 8:00 PM, the first King's Ball follows — the social highlight of the festival week, where the new King and Queen officially dance for the first time.
Friday, May 15th, 2026, starting at 8:00 PM, is dedicated to the second King's Ball with friendly clubs: other marksmen's clubs from the Münsterland region visit with their King and Queen couples, dancing and celebrating together. The traditional costumes and uniforms of various clubs add visual variety to the festival tent evening.
Saturday, May 16th, 2026, is Family Afternoon — activities for children, a more relaxed program, and the winding down of the festival week. A typical day where the marksmen's family tidies up the festival grounds and says goodbye to the intensive festival week.
Unlike the large Schützenfeste on the Rhine, celebrations in the Münsterland are more intense and longer — four days instead of three are the norm there. The atmosphere is more disciplined, with clear uniforms, formal ceremonies (Festkommers), and conservative traditions. If you want to experience an authentic Münsterland Schützenfest, this is the place to be — tourists are welcome, but should know: it's a club festival, not a public Volksfest.
Horstmar is located in the western Steinfurt district, about 15 km northeast of Coesfeld. The town, with approximately 6,700 inhabitants, has a very rural character and consists of several districts such as Leer, Haltern (not to be confused with Haltern am See), and Burgsteinfurt. The Schützenfeste of the districts are cultural anchors of identity.
Münsterland Schützenfest in a classic four-day structure. The King's Shoot decides the royal title, two King's Balls serve as social highlights, and a Family Day concludes the festivities.
King's Shoot is public. Festival tent admission for King's Balls and tent party via the marksmen's club. Family Day is open to the public.
By car: A31 exit Ochtrup-Süd, then B70 and follow local signs towards Horstmar/Leer. By public transport: Coesfeld or Burgsteinfurt train station, then bus.
Tent party and King's Balls: Admission via the club. King's Shoot on Thursday is open to the public.
The formal ceremony (Festkommers) and the King's Shoot on Thursday afternoon (2:00 PM) are the most solemn moments — visually, the first King's Ball on Thursday evening is particularly atmospheric when the new King and Queen dance for the first time.
