Shooting and Homeland Tradition in Hürth-Efferen

In the Rhenish Hürth-Efferen, southwest of Cologne, the Schützenbruderschaften (shooting associations) maintain a tradition that has grown over generations. The annual Schützenfest (shooting festival) is one of the most important folk festivals in the district — and in 2026, it will take place from Saturday, June 6th, to Monday, June 8th, on the Efferen Schützenplatz.

Program Highlights

• Saturday, June 6, 2026 — Torch Parade in the Evening: The traditional torch parade through Efferen with the shooters, music ensembles, and riding groups is an atmospheric start. Followed by a festival tent with dancing.
• Sunday, June 7, 2026 — Festival Parade at 3:00 PM: The most public spectacle: All shooters, clubs, riders, and music ensembles march in festive attire through Efferen. Reception at the Schützenplatz, parade before the reigning king.
• Monday, June 8, 2026 — Wind-Down: Morning pint, family afternoon, coronation of the new royal couple, and closing ball.

Music by Musik-Corps Rheingold Hürth-Efferen

The Schützenfest is musically accompanied by the Musik-Corps „Rheingold" Hürth-Efferen e.V., one of the most traditional music corps in the Rhein-Erft district. With march music during the torch and festival parades and concert pieces in the festival tent, the corps shapes the sound of the festival.

Hürth is located in the Rhein-Erft-Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia, directly southwest of Cologne — a growing city with 60,000 inhabitants and close ties to the cathedral city. Efferen is one of the historically developed districts and is known for its lively club life. The Schützenfest is one of the most important events in the Hürth event calendar, alongside Carnival and the Stadtfest (city festival).

On the Efferen Schützenplatz over the weekend:

• Bird shooting to determine the king
• Festival tent with dance evenings (Saturday and Sunday with live music or DJs)
• Family afternoon with children's program on Sunday
• Morning pint on Monday with brass music
• Coronation ball and handover of royal title

Getting There

By public transport: Stadtbahn KVB line 18 to Hürth-Hermülheim, then bus 717 or 982 towards Efferen. By car via the A4 (exit Köln-Klettenberg or Hürth) or the A553. Parking in the surrounding residential streets — quickly occupied on festival days.
