The Summer Stage of the City of Hürth
Hürth, with a good 60,000 inhabitants, is a medium-sized city in the Rhein-Erft district, directly southwest of Cologne. With "Hürth in Summer," the city has established a cultural format that declares the summer month between the end of June and mid-July as the city's stage. The venue is the cultural beer garden at the Bürgerhaus on Friedrich-Ebert-Straße — a green courtyard with a stage, benches, and a bar.
Daily Live Music in the Beer Garden
The program is unusually dense for a city of this size: instead of individual large concerts, there is live music almost daily, plus readings, comedy nights, cabaret, and occasional children's programs in the afternoon. The artists are mostly from the region — Cologne, Bonn, Düren, Aachen — with a few national acts. For 2026, Mirko Bäumer with his "lustigen Musikanten" (funny musicians) is announced, among others; further acts will be announced in May 2026.
Hürth, the Rhein-Erft District, and the Rhineland
The Rhein-Erft district borders Cologne directly and is culturally entirely part of the Rhineland — with all that entails: Karneval (carnival), songwriters with the local "Kölsch" dialect, a distinct club and civic culture. "Hürth in Summer" picks up on these traditions without staging them museally. Anyone traveling south from Cologne in June-July on line 18 can set up a folding chair by Wednesday evening, have a Kölsch, and join in a Hürth program evening.
Free Admission as a Concept
All program items are accessible free of charge. The city finances the program from the cultural budget, supplemented by sponsors and revenue from gastronomy. Thus, "Hürth in Summer" is a model that makes urban cultural work possible even in medium-sized cities: low-threshold, community-oriented, focused on local artistic talent. Precisely this mix has ensured full benches and satisfied audiences for years, consisting not of tourists, but of Hürth residents and neighbors.
