Marksmanship with 390 Years of Tradition

Hückeswagen, a town of around 16,000 inhabitants in the Oberbergischer Kreis (Cologne administrative district), is located in the Bergisches Land region on the Wupper dam. The Schützenverein Hückeswagen 1636 e.V. is one of the oldest marksmen's associations in western Germany — founded in 1636, almost 390 years ago, in the midst of the Thirty Years' War. The annual Schützenfest is one of the highlights in Hückeswagen's event calendar — in 2026, it runs from July 17 to 20.

Four Days of Festivities, Friday to Monday

The Schützenfest lasts for four days: Opening on Friday, July 17, with brass band music and a subsequent DJ party in the festival tent; Saturday, July 18, with an insignia reception, a town concert, and grand fireworks in the evening; Sunday, July 19, with a traditional morning pint (Frühschoppen), a commemorative ceremony, a parade, and a reception for the reigning King; Monday, July 20, as a family day with the King's proclamation and live music to conclude the festival.

Funfair on Three Squares

The funfair (Kirmes) extends over three central Hückeswagen squares: Etapler Platz, Bahnhofsplatz, and Aldi-Parkplatz — a division that is unusually extensive for a small town like Hückeswagen and demonstrates the scale of the Schützenfest tradition. Rides for all age groups (dodgems, carousels, Ferris wheel, children's rides), candy stalls, food stands, dice games, and a shooting range fill the squares.

Pyrotechnic Highlight on Saturday Evening

The traditional highlight is the fireworks on Saturday evening — fired late in the evening after the town concert and insignia reception. In its small-town tradition, Hückeswagen offers a professional pyrotechnics show that is worth seeing for a Schützenfest of this size. Families and visitors from neighboring towns come specifically for the Saturday evening program.

Sunday: Morning Pint and Parade

Sunday (July 19, 2026) follows classic marksmen's tradition: morning pint (Frühschoppen) in the morning with traditional brass band music, a commemorative ceremony for the deceased members of the marksmen's association, a parade through Hückeswagen with the reigning King and Queen and the marksmen's formations, and a King's reception in the festival tent in the afternoon.

Monday: Family Day and King's Proclamation

Family Day on Monday (July 20, 2026) is designed as a relaxed end to the festival: lunch in the festival tent, the King's proclamation with the new Schützenkönig (King) 2026/2027 in the afternoon, and live music and a cozy festival conclusion in the evening. Families with children traditionally use Monday for a visit to the funfair without the weekend crowds.

Getting There

Hückeswagen is accessible by car via the L 414 and L 415. Approximately 30 minutes' drive from the Bergisches Land and northern Cologne areas. Public transport: Bus lines from Remscheid and Wermelskirchen (stop: Hückeswagen Markt). No direct train connection in the town — nearest train stations are Wermelskirchen and Remscheid-Lennep.
