Traditional three-day Schützenfest in the Sauerland district of Heggen
The Sauerland region is one of the strongholds of marksmen's associations (Schützenwesen) in Germany — hardly a village that doesn't have its own association and its own Schützenfest. Heggen, a district of the municipality of Finnentrop in the Olpe district, is no exception. The Heggen Schützenverein hosts its traditional Schützenfest annually — from July 11th to 13th, 2026, lining up, the king's shoot, coronation, and parade are on the agenda.
The Schützenfest follows the classic Sauerland schedule: Friday, July 11th, 2026 Opening with lining up and an evening dance in the festival tent. Saturday, July 12th King's shoot at the bird-shooting mast, coronation of the new marksmen's king (and possibly king couple), coronation ball. Sunday, July 13th Festival service, parade through Heggen, closing dance. Throughout the weekend, the festival tent with its bar, food, and dance floor is the central meeting point.
The highlight of the Sauerland Schützenfest is the king's shoot: using air rifles or firearms, participants shoot at a wooden bird effigy on a mast — whoever shoots off the last piece of the bird becomes the marksmen's king for the next season. The tradition dates back to the civil defense function of the marksmen's guilds in the Middle Ages and early modern period — today, it is a symbolic competition and a way to secure the identity of the association community.
The entire Heggen community gathers in the festival tent over the three days — association members, their families, neighbors, guests from the neighboring communities of Finnentrop and the Olpe district. A dance band or cover band provides the musical accompaniment; bartenders and association helpers take care of beer, schnapps, and Sauerland specialties — black salsify, bratwurst, ham sandwiches, Brägelchen.
Heggen is a district of the municipality of Finnentrop in the southern Sauerland, located in the Olpe district. With around 1,500 inhabitants, Heggen is a typical Sauerland district — nestled in the hilly, wooded landscape of the Ebbegebirge Nature Park. The municipality of Finnentrop as a whole (around 17,000 inhabitants) lies between Olpe and Lennestadt and is accessible via the L 539 and the Sauerland line (RB 92 / RE 17) between Hagen and Siegen.
The Heggen Schützenfest is one of many in the Olpe district — the Lokalplus page (lokalplus.nrw/finnentrop/schuetzenfest) lists the season's dates. Those seeking the Schützenfest atmosphere in the Sauerland will find a festival in a neighboring district almost every weekend in July and August. Heggen fits into this dense summer festival culture — a piece of lived Sauerland association identity.
The 2026 season of the Heggen Marksmen's Association culminates in the three-day Schützenfest from July 11th–13th, 2026. Sauerland marksmen's tradition with lining up, king's shoot, coronation, and parade shapes the district's life.
Parade, lining up, and festival service are free. Dance events in the festival tent require admission — tickets at the entrance or from the association.
