Traditional four-day marksmen's and folk festival of the St. Sebastianus Schützenverein (marksmen's club) of 1848 in the Düsseldorf district of Oberbilk — from Saturday, August 1st to Tuesday, August 4th, 2026
From Saturday, August 1st, to Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, the St. Sebastianus Schützenverein Düsseldorf-Oberbilk of 1848 e.V. celebrates its annual Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) in the Düsseldorf district of Oberbilk. Founded in 1848, the club is one of Düsseldorf's oldest active marksmen's clubs — established in the revolutionary year when many civic marksmen's, gymnastics, and singing clubs were formed in Germany. Today, the Schützenfest Oberbilk is a vibrant meeting point for the district and its neighboring areas.
The Schützenfest follows the proven Rhenish dramatic structure over four days from Saturday to Tuesday:
(Program Note: The Schützenverein will publish the exact daily schedules in the weeks before the festival, subject to change — the above structure follows the typical four-day Rhenish Schützenfest schedule from Saturday to Tuesday.)
Oberbilk is a traditional Düsseldorf district in the south of the city center, bordered by Bilk to the west, Friedrichstadt to the north, and Wersten/Eller to the south. Statistically, Oberbilk is one of Düsseldorf's most international districts — with a significant Turkish, Italian, Greek, and Arab population. This makes the Schützenfest an interesting case: Rhenish-Catholic influenced marksmen's tradition meets a district where many residents come from different cultural backgrounds. The Schützenverein today sees itself more as a district festival organizer than a religious-denominational group.
The festival grounds are located near the Mitsubishi Electric Halle (formerly Philipshalle), Oberbilk's largest event venue. The hall is one of Düsseldorf's most important concert and show venues (12,500 seats) and regularly brings audiences to the district with its events. The Schützenfest area is easily accessible by public transport — subway stations nearby, trams connect the district with the city center.
St. Sebastianus (Sebastian) is the traditional patron of Catholic Schützenvereine in the Rhineland and Westphalia — a 3rd-century Roman martyr who, according to legend, was pierced by arrows. The symbolism fits the marksmen's tradition (bow and arrow, later rifle) and still shapes the parades, club banners, and the self-image of many clubs today. The marksmen assemble in traditional uniforms, often with a Schützenhut (marksmen's hat) and feather plume.
Düsseldorf has a rich marksmen's tradition — besides Oberbilk, the Heimatfreunde Gerresheim, the St. Sebastianer Wittlaer, the Hubertus-Schützenverein Lörick, and many others celebrate their own district Schützenfeste. The dates can be found on the WIRinOberbilk platform and the Interessengemeinschaft Düsseldorfer Schützen (IGDS); the festival season runs widely across the entire city from early summer to autumn.
In 2026, the Oberbilk Schützenverein continues its tradition maintained since 1848. Four days of Schützenfest and folk festival with classic Rhenish dramaturgy: festival opening on Saturday, high mass and parade on Sunday (busiest day), king's shooting on Sunday afternoon, crowning and Königsball on Sunday evening, family day and Frühschoppen on Monday, festival conclusion on Tuesday. Funfair rides and festival tent catering accompany the festivities. The WIRinOberbilk platform will communicate the exact daily schedules in the weeks before the festival.
Free admission to the festival grounds. Schützenball and Königsball may require tickets from the club. Funfair rides and festival tent catering at daily prices.
