International science festival in Düsseldorf cafés — HHU researchers in bars
Pint of Science is an international science festival that takes place annually simultaneously in 28 countries — from Australia to Brazil to Great Britain. The concept: Researchers leave their universities and labs to present their work in local bars, cafés, and pubs to a general audience. The barrier to higher education is lowered, and discourse between science and society is initiated — over a pint, a glass of wine, or an espresso.
The 2026 Düsseldorf edition runs over two evenings: Monday, May 18, and Wednesday, May 20, 2026. The venues are two Düsseldorf cafés with a strong local identity: Café DIE FLIESE in the Oberbilk district and Café Modigliani in Unterbilk. The choice of both locations reflects the geographical distribution of HHU and the Düsseldorf science scene.
The speakers primarily come from Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU) — Düsseldorf's comprehensive university with a focus on medicine, life sciences, economics, and humanities. The topics are as diverse as HHU's research: from quantum physics and neuroscience to social research. The lectures are presented in an understandable way — a classic science format that has been successful worldwide in recent years.
The flow of an evening: Arrival from 6:00 PM, order at the bar, welcome by the moderation team, then two to three short lectures (15–20 minutes) each followed by Q&A with the audience. Small breaks between lectures for networking and ordering more drinks at the bar. The atmosphere is relaxed — many lectures are held with humor and visuals, not with PowerPoint battles.
Düsseldorf is the state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia with around 620,000 inhabitants and home to Heinrich Heine University (~30,000 students). The city is world-renowned as a center for fashion, trade fairs, and business — its scientific dimension often takes a backseat. Pint of Science gives research in Düsseldorf a visible place in the heart of urban culture — a small but valuable initiative.
Pint of Science brings Düsseldorf researchers to the bar: two cafés, two evenings, international atmosphere. Arrival from 6 PM, lectures start around 7 PM, two to three short talks per evening with Q&A. Topics from HHU's focus areas — medicine, life sciences, physics, social research.
Düsseldorf is part of the worldwide festival, taking place simultaneously in 28 countries — from Australia to Brazil. A global science movement with local charm: Pint of Science democratizes science by bringing it out of ivory towers and into the bar.
Note: The exact speakers, topics, and times will be published in the weeks before the festival on pintofscience.de/events/duesseldorf.
