Schützentag of the St. Hubertus Schützenbruderschaft 1925 at the St. Servatius Parish Centre
The St. Hubertus Schützenbruderschaft Bornheim und Botzdorf was re-founded in 1925 and currently has around 50 members in four companies. Their motto “For Faith, Custom, and Homeland” reflects the brotherhood's close connection to the Catholic parish of St. Servatius and the region's traditions. The annual Schützenfest on the second weekend of August is the highlight of the club's year and a fixed point in the festival calendar of the city of Bornheim.
The event begins with a festive mass in the St. Servatius Parish Church, followed by the wreath-laying ceremony at the war memorial for deceased members. Afterwards, a grand parade will march through Königstraße, with all companies of the brotherhood, friendly shooting clubs, and local organizations participating. Musical accompaniment is provided by the Musikverein Bornheim 1967 e.V. — a close partner of the marksmen for decades.
A special feature of the Bornheim Schützenfest: The Bürgerkönigschießen in the afternoon is not reserved for members of the brotherhood but is open to all citizens of the community. Whoever takes the decisive shot with an air rifle will be crowned Bürgerkönig (citizens' king) or Bürgerkönigin (citizens' queen) and will represent the city at various events for one year. This format underscores the brotherhood's commitment to fostering the shooting sport as a community event.
The entire Schützentag takes place around the St. Servatius Parish Centre at Ohrbachstraße 26. The shooting club's clubhouse with a shooting range, the inner courtyard, and the adjacent parish hall provide space for the festival tent, food stalls, and a drinks counter. A continuous program runs from the morning mass at 8:30 AM until the festivities wind down around 10:00 PM — families are especially welcome.
Bornheim is a town in the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, located on the edge of the left-Rhine Vorgebirge (foothills) between Bonn and Cologne. With around 50,000 inhabitants across 14 districts, Bornheim is the largest apple-growing region in North Rhine-Westphalia and shapes the character of this part of the Vorgebirge. The shooting tradition has a long history in the left-Rhine Vorgebirge — almost every district of Bornheim maintains its own brotherhood with its own Schützenfest.
