Storytelling theatre, play festivals, and circus arts workshops in the Spiekeroog spa gardens
Circus Tausendtraum has been an integral part of the Spiekeroog summer for years. Unlike a traditional circus guest performance, it operates with an entire season of small and large formats: storytelling theatre in the afternoon, participatory play festivals on the meadow, circus arts workshops where children learn juggling, acrobatics, and balance, as well as occasional island circus performances where workshop participants themselves take to the stage.
The venue is the Spiekeroog spa gardens – a green, sheltered area near the island centre, which serves as an open stage for most programmes. The atmosphere is familial, admission to many programme points is free or low-cost, and the short distances on the car-free island allow for combining several dates.
Within the season, there are individual circus festivals that offer special programmes. In 2026, these are scheduled for July 14, July 27, August 3, August 10, August 24, and September 7, among others. On these days, workshops, shows, and play festivals merge into a multi-hour programme that attracts families from across the East Frisian Wadden Sea region.
Tausendtraum sees itself not only as an entertainer but also as an educator. The circus arts workshops follow a serious circus pedagogy methodology: children experience that tricks are not innate but learnable, thereby gaining self-confidence, movement security, and joy in trying things out. This mix of play and learning shapes the 2026 island circus experience.
The season is again divided into three programme strands: regular workshop times for children, free play festivals with hands-on stations, and curated circus festivals on designated dates. The season starts on July 5, 2026, and concludes on September 11. The exact weekly schedules will be published on the island municipality's website before the season begins.
The workshops teach juggling with scarves and balls, floor movement games, balance exercises, and short acrobatic sequences. The content is differentiated by age; many children attend for several consecutive days, so real progress becomes visible over the course of the summer holidays.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the organiser in spring. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years.
