Marksmen's Tradition in the Cathedral City

Billerbeck, with its approximately 12,000 inhabitants, is arguably the most Catholic small town in the Münsterland region. It is said that Saint Ludgerus died here in 809 AD — the Ludgerus Cathedral towers over the town center today. The tradition of marksmen's associations is deeply rooted here: with the Allgemeiner Billerbecker Schützenverein, the St. Johanni-Schützenbruderschaft, and the Schützenverein Ossensiel, there are several associations that hold their festivals annually.

The festival of the Allgemeiner Billerbecker Schützenverein begins on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 2:00 PM and lasts until approximately 3:00 AM. Nestled within a whole summer of Billerbeck Schützenfeste: St. Johanni celebrates from June 26–28, the Schützenverein Ossensiel from July 3–5 — for those who truly want to immerse themselves, Billerbeck offers a summer full of marksmen's options.

Where: Schützenwiese am Weihgarten

The Schützenwiese am Weihgarten is the association's traditional festival grounds. An open meadow where the festival tent is erected, the shooting range for the king's competition is prepared, and the public gathers. The Weihgarten is located on the outskirts of town and is easily accessible on foot from Billerbeck.

The Billerbecker Blasorchester

A special feature of this festival: the Billerbecker Blasorchester provides the musical accompaniment. Marches, polkas, brass band standards — the repertoire is that of a classic Westphalian festival orchestra. Throughout the day, the orchestra will play multiple times, during the parade, the concert, and on stage in the festival tent.

Schedule of a Schützenfest

The day follows the classic Westphalian Schützenfest schedule:

• Lunch and reception of the marksmen brothers at the club's local pub
• Parade in uniform and march to the Schützenwiese
• King's shooting competition — a ritual from the 15th/16th century, where a wooden bird ("Vogel") is shot at
• Proclamation of the new king
• Concert and evening program in the festival tent
• Dancing and socializing until the early morning hours
