Schützenfest with almost two hundred years of history
The Bürgerschützenverein e.V. Bad Sassendorf 1834 is one of the oldest clubs in the brine and spa town in the Soest district. The annual Schützenfest is a firm fixture in the municipality's summer calendar – on Saturday, July 4, 2026, starting at 12 PM, it will be celebrated in and around the Schützenhalle on Schützenstraße 15. Westphalian customs, club life, and village community come together here in a packed day's program.
Bird Shooting, King, and Polonaise
The highlight of every Schützenfest is the bird shooting at the wooden eagle on the shooting stand. Whoever knocks off the last splinter becomes the Schützenkönig (King) – complete with his court, royal medal, and coronation ceremony. Music groups from the region play along, with the Musikzug Bad Sassendorf regularly participating. In the evening, the Schützenhalle becomes the center of attention with the festival ceremony, the King's Ball, and the polonaise.
Bad Sassendorf – Spa Town with a Schützen Heart
Bad Sassendorf, located between Soest and Werl, is known as a brine spa town – the Westphalian graduation tower of the same name and the spa gardens shape the town's appearance. The BSV's Schützenfest is one of the events that highlights the contrast between quiet spa operations and lively club life. Those undergoing spa treatment in the region or planning a weekend trip to the Hellweg route can experience an authentic Westphalian Schützenfest with full ceremony here.
Club Life and Background
The BSV Bad Sassendorf 1834 is a member of the Westfälischer Schützenbund (Westphalian Shooting Association). In addition to the summer Schützenfest, the club organizes king's shooting, bird shooting for junior marksmen, and club evenings. The Bad Sassendorfer Damengarde (Ladies' Guard) and local pipe bands are also involved in the festivities.
