Three-day Volksfest with a grand parade — organized by the Gilde vun 1490 in the Ostholstein district
Ahrensbök is located in the Ostholstein district, not far from the district town of Eutin. The traditional heritage festival has been a social anchor ritual here for centuries. The Ahrensböker Gill vun 1490 e.V. — the marksmen's guild acting as the organizer — can trace its roots back to the year 1490. This makes it one of the oldest active marksmen's guilds in Schleswig-Holstein. What began as a self-defense association of the late medieval village is today a vibrant traditional community that organizes and maintains the heritage festival.
The undisputed highlight of the Schützen- und Heimatfest is the grand parade on Saturday from 2 PM to 4 PM. Around ten brass bands and marching bands parade through the streets of Ahrensbök, followed by marksmen's guilds, heritage clubs, volunteer fire brigades, and local businesses. Some march on foot, others arrive with historical carriages, decorated tractors, or floats — all united in the region's collective appearance. Thousands of spectators line the streets, many from outside the district.
Alongside the Volksfest character, the marksmen's tradition is central: the traditional king's shooting competition among guild members, at the end of which a new marksmen's king and queen are crowned. The shooting is a communal ritual — not a high-performance sporting competition, but a ceremonial practice that combines membership, responsibility, and representation.
Surrounding this is a classic North German Volksfest: carousels, swing boats, Ferris wheel, tombola, stalls with bratwurst, fries, crêpes, cocktails. In the evenings, there's dance music in the festival hall and marquee — cover bands, regional pop, Schlager. It's a festival where the whole family can find something to enjoy over the weekend — from small children riding in a carousel cup for the first time to seniors who have been attending the King's Ball for decades.
The organizers articulate three guiding values for the festival:
Ahrensbök is a market town with about 8,500 inhabitants in the Holstein Switzerland region, located about halfway between Lübeck and Eutin. The region is scenically attractive — forests, lakes, rolling hills —, gastronomically rich, and well-developed for tourism without being overcrowded. The Schützen- und Heimatfest is considered one of the largest Volksfest events in Ostholstein.
The Schützen- und Heimatfest 2026 runs from Friday, July 3, to Sunday, July 5, 2026. The organizer is the Ahrensböker Gill vun 1490 e.V.. The undisputed highlight — the parade — takes place on Saturday, July 4, from 2 PM to 4 PM. Clubs, marksmen's guilds, fire brigades, and companies can register online to participate (on foot or with vehicles, tractors, decorated floats, with or without music).
