Neighbourhood festival with soapbox derby and duck race at Torplatz
The Schrotefest is one of those festivals you only know if you're part of it — and that's exactly what makes it charming. Since the early 2000s, the Bürger- und Heimatverein Magdeburg-Diesdorf e.V. (Civic and Heritage Association) has invited people to three days of neighbourhood festival around Torplatz in the Diesdorf district every June weekend. The name derives from the Schrote stream, which flows through the old village and becomes the most unusual race track in the state capital on Sundays.
Friday evening usually kicks off with public viewing or a live band on the main stage at Torplatz — if there's a European or World Cup on, everyone cheers together here. Saturday afternoon is dedicated to the soapbox derby: from 1 p.m., homemade carts thunder down Hollehochstraße, helmets and brakes mandatory, creativity and fan support at least as important as the actual time. Simultaneously, the volunteer fire department in Alt Diesdorf 4 opens its doors for an open day featuring historical firefighting equipment. On Sunday at 1:30 p.m., the starting gun fires for the duck race — hundreds of yellow plastic ducks paddle down the Schrote, with proceeds going to the association's work. Plus, children's activities, a family fun run, a flea market, and non-stop bratwurst, beer, and coffee with cake.
Diesdorf is a district in western Magdeburg, in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, within the independent city limits (AGS 15003). Visitors to the festival immerse themselves in village structures in the middle of a large city: old half-timbered farmhouses, the baroque Torplatz, and community life revolving around the fire department, sports club, and heritage association. The volume remains moderate, the audience is mixed — families, regulars, and curious Magdeburg residents from other districts. Free admission, closing time around midnight.
The 23rd edition of the Schrotefest will again bring a long weekend of folk festival atmosphere to Torplatz in Magdeburg's Diesdorf district from June 12 to 14, 2026. The organiser is the Bürger- und Heimatverein Magdeburg-Diesdorf e.V.; the detailed programme is traditionally published four to six weeks before the festival on wir-diesdorfer.de.
The complete 2026 programme with band names and exact times is expected to be published in May 2026 on wir-diesdorfer.de.
By public transport: Tram line 1 from the main station to the Diesdorf terminus, then a five-minute walk to Torplatz. By car via Albert-Vater-Straße, parking in the surrounding side streets — it gets crowded on festival weekends, so arriving early is recommended.
Free admission to the entire festival grounds. The soapbox derby and duck race are free participation events; registration on-site.
Bratwurst, fries, coffee, and cake from the heritage association and the fire department, beer served at Torplatz. Not a large catering operation, but rather association kitchens.
Children's area on Sunday morning, bouncy castle, children's flea market. Only Torplatz is fully accessible; the soapbox race track and the Schrote stream are slightly sloped.
