60 stalls around St. Michael's Church in the Markgräflerland region
When the first lights are lit around St. Michael's Church in early December, one of the most traditional Christmas markets in the southern Black Forest begins. The Schopfheim Christmas Market will take place in 2026 on two Saturdays in Advent — on December 1st and 8th, 2026 — and will gather around 60 stalls in the historic old town.
The special feature of the Schopfheim market is the high proportion of homemade items and arts and crafts. As described on the official website: "Lots of homemade and self-created items" characterize the assortment. You will find ceramics, woodwork, knitted and sewn textiles, jewelry, Advent decorations, and glass art — a real alternative to mass-produced goods.
Culinary offerings at the stalls include a wide selection: mulled wine and punch in several varieties, bratwurst, potato pancakes, crêpes, gingerbread, roasted almonds, Black Forest ham, and sweet specialties. Several stalls focus on regional products from the Markgräflerland and Wiesental regions.
The musical accompaniment is a tradition with its own significance. Students from the Friedrich-Ebert-School Schopfheim and singers from the Eichen choir perform in front of and inside St. Michael's Church. Classical Christmas carols, brass ensembles from the Schopfheim music association, and choral performances provide the musical backdrop.
With around 20,000 inhabitants, Schopfheim is located in the Lörrach district in the Wiesental valley, at the transition between the Markgräflerland and the Black Forest. The town is an important center of the Wiesental and a starting point for excursions into the southern Black Forest (Belchen, Feldberg) as well as to the High Rhine and the tri-border area of Germany-Switzerland-France. The historic old town with its half-timbered houses and the 13th-century St. Michael's Church forms the romantic backdrop for the Advent market.
The organizer of the Christmas market is the Förderverein Museum Döbele e.V. in cooperation with the town of Schopfheim. The Museum Döbele documents the history and folk culture of the Wiesental — the proceeds from the Christmas market partly go towards the preservation and programming of this cultural institution.
The Schopfheim Christmas Market will take place in 2026 on two Tuesdays during Advent — on December 1st and December 8th. Around 60 stalls will gather in and around St. Michael's Church in the historic town center.
The special feature: A high proportion of homemade items and arts and crafts — ceramics, wood, textiles, jewelry, glass art, and regional food products from the Markgräflerland and Wiesental. The market will be musically accompanied by students from the Friedrich-Ebert-School and singers from the Eichen choir.
