Traditional Kirchweih on the Sunday before St. Bartholomew's Day in the Schönenberg district
The word Kerwe is the Palatinate dialect form for "Kirchweih" — that is, the festival commemorating the anniversary of the consecration of the local church. Almost every village in the Palatinate celebrates a Kerwe annually, with the date being based on the original consecration day, the patron saint's feast day, or a regionally determined date. The Kerwe is more than just a religious festival: it is simultaneously a folk festival, a family reunion, and the most important social event of the village year.
The parish church of Schönenberg is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, one of Jesus' twelve apostles. His liturgical feast day is August 24th, and the Schönenberger Kerwe is traditionally held around this date. The decision to celebrate on the first Sunday before St. Bartholomew's Day — rather than on the day itself — follows the rural practice of celebrating on a weekend day when the majority of citizens do not have to work.
The Kerwe often begins on Sunday with a festive church service in the parish church. Afterwards, the villagers gather for Frühschoppen (morning pint) and lunch, often in the local festival hall, community center, or village hall. Local clubs serve Palatinate specialties — Saumagen, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, Sauerkraut, homemade desserts — and pour beer and wines from the surrounding region. In the afternoon, coffee and cake are served, a tradition particularly enjoyed by the older residents. The evening often features live music or dancing with a DJ, sometimes supplemented by a disco for the younger generation.
For many residents, the Kerwe is the most important weekend of the year, when relatives and former residents also return. Families meet, old friendships are maintained, and the clubs demonstrate how vibrant volunteer engagement is in the village. This social function explains why the Kerwe — despite all societal changes — retains its significance even in the 21st century.
With August 23rd, the 2026 Kerwe falls on the late summer weekend before St. Bartholomew's Day (August 24th, Monday). The local clubs — typically the fire department, sports club, church choir, and rural youth — are preparing to host guests. Visitors are expected from the entire village, from the surrounding districts of Kübelberg, Sand, and Schmittweiler, as well as from neighboring municipalities in the Kusel and Saarpfalz districts.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the local municipality in advance. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years for a typical Palatinate Kerwe:
Festive church service in St. Bartholomew's Parish Church for the patron saint's feast day. Afterwards, a joint Frühschoppen with breakfast beer and snacks in front of the church or in the community hall.
Lunch with Palatinate specialties: Saumagen with Sauerkraut, Bratwurst, Leberknödel, potato soup, Maultaschen, or other classic dishes. Served by the local clubs. Palatinate wine, beer, and Schorle as beverages.
Coffee and cake hour with homemade cakes from the residents' kitchens. Family program, intergenerational gathering, games for children.
Evening event with live music, DJ set, or dancing. Social gathering until late into the night.
