Neighborhood festival with art mile and Sunday shopping
In the north of Hamburg's Eimsbüttel district lies the neighborhood of Schnelsen – over 28,000 inhabitants, terraced houses, shopping streets, small and medium-sized businesses. With the A7 tunnel roof over the Autobahn 7, put into operation in 2014, the district has one of Europe's largest urban noise protection projects right on its doorstep – and has gained a new public area that also benefits the Schnelsenfest.
Since 2009, the Interest Group Herz von Schnelsen e.V. has been organizing the neighborhood festival. The association unites business people, clubs, and residents of Frohmestraße and sees itself as an advocate for the local community. With the Schnelsenfest, it creates a social and economic highlight once a year that strengthens the district's identity.
The festival is broadly positioned:
Frohmestraße is Schnelsen's central shopping axis. On normal days, it's an average Hamburg shopping street, but once a year it transforms into a kilometer-long festival mile. Stages are set up on sections of the street, shops open their display windows outwards, and restaurants put tables on the street.
The Eimsbüttel district, along with Hamburg-Mitte, is one of Hamburg's most densely populated districts. Schnelsen is in the north, followed further south by Niendorf, Lokstedt, Eppendorf, Rotherbaum, and Eimsbüttel itself. Each of these neighborhoods hosts its own local festivals – the Schnelsenfest is one of the most traditional, alongside the Eppendorfer Landstraßenfest and the Niendorfer Volksfest.
The Schnelsenfest 2026 is planned again as an annual neighborhood festival. The exact date and program will be communicated in late summer 2026 by the association Herz von Schnelsen e.V. on herzvonschnelsen.de and its channels.
Based on previous editions, a Sunday at the end of September is expected (2025: September 28, with Sunday shopping). The established program points are expected: live music on several stages along Frohmestraße, art mile, "Langschläfer-Flohmarkt", children's festival with bouncy castle and face painting, barbecue stands, and Sunday shopping. The A7 tunnel roof, usable since 2014, will also remain part of the festival area.
