Carnival parade in the Duchy of Lauenburg
The Schnakenbek Carnival Parade is a North German rarity: While carnival is traditionally considered a Rhenish and Southern German phenomenon, a unique jester's tradition has been established in the municipality of Schnakenbek in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg. The Schnakenbeker Carnevalsverein von 1990 e.V. has been organizing the event since its founding — making the club a firm fixture in village life since 1990.
The parade starts at Heidelbeerhof Pehmöller — a traditional farm on the outskirts, which also serves as the venue for the carnival sessions — and winds through the streets of the municipality to the Gemeindehaus Schnakenbek. Along the route, float occupants throw sweets ("Kamelle") and small gifts to the crowd — a jester's revelry in a concentrated village form.
Characteristic is the typical North German mix of classic carnival floats and decorated tractors, which are part of the agricultural tradition in the region. Walking groups participate in costume, and the youth fire brigade of Lauenburg regularly joins the parade — a community event that involves the entire region.
Schnakenbek is located in southern Schleswig-Holstein, directly at the transition to the Elbe and not far from Lauenburg an der Elbe and Lüneburg. Carnival here is not a mass tourist phenomenon — but a genuine village festival that draws its identity from the contrast with the North German mentality.
The 2025/2026 carnival season concludes in Schnakenbek with the traditional parade on January 18. Registrations for walking groups and floats are accepted in advance directly by the board of the Schnakenbeker Carnevalsverein. The meeting point for all participants is 12:30 PM at Heidelbeerhof Pehmöller, from where the parade starts at 1:11 PM.
The parade combines classic carnival elements with North German down-to-earthness: colorful floats roll alongside artfully decorated tractors through the town. Kamelle are thrown to the audience, live music accompanies the procession, and the typical local "Helau" (instead of the Rhenish "Alaaf") echoes along the route.
The detailed schedule for the 2026 carnival parade will be published on the Schnakenbeker Carnevalsverein's channels in the weeks leading up to the event. Based on experience, the day's plan is as follows:
Registrations for participation as a walking group or with a float are directly with the board via the club website.
Free admission for spectators. Registration as an active walking group or float participant via the Schnakenbeker Carnevalsverein.
Anyone wishing to participate in the parade with their own walking group or float should register with the board of the Schnakenbeker Carnevalsverein via the club website.
The parade is free to attend. The best spots are along the route between Heidelbeerhof Pehmöller and the community center. Warm clothing recommended — January in the North can be chilly.
By car via the A24 (Geesthacht exit) or the B5 from Lauenburg. Parking in the municipality is limited — carpooling or traveling from Lauenburg is recommended.
