Traditional three-day kirmes in the Oberes Schwarzatal — July 17th to 19th, 2026
Oelze is a district of the small municipality of Katzhütte in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district, in the Oberes Schwarzatal — a region on the southwestern edge of the Thuringian Slate Mountains. The village is located at about 500 meters above sea level in a green valley on the Schwarza river, a tributary of the Saale. Every year in summer, the Oelzer Kermse takes place here — a three-day village fair with a long tradition, supported by the local Musikverein Oelze.
In 2026, the kirmes will take place from July 17th to 19th (Friday to Sunday) at the Vereinshaus Oberes Schwarzatal. The format is classically South Thuringian: a festival tent, dance floor, dance band, bratwurst, beer, and celebrating together in the village community. Unlike large city festivals, thousands of tourists don't come here — the charm lies in its family-friendly character and its strong local roots.
The "Kermse" (or "Kirmes", regionally "Kermes") is an old tradition from the German-speaking world, originally stemming from the medieval church consecration festival — the celebration of the anniversary of the village church's inauguration. Over the centuries, it has evolved into a secular folk festival where the entire village community comes together. In South Thuringia, Kermsen are small, intimate festivals with a strong traditional character — live music with brass bands or cover bands, classic folk festival food, and dancing late into the night.
The Musikverein Oelze organizes the kirmes on a voluntary basis. Members of the association play music, take care of setup and catering, and organize the program. The Musikverein has a permanent place in village life — from setting up the Maypole to Christmas performances, it is the musical soul of the place. The kirmes is its largest self-organized event.
The region around Oelze and Katzhütte is located in the heart of the Thuringian Slate Mountains, a low mountain range with dense forests and many hiking trails. Those arriving for the kirmes weekend can easily plan hikes — for example, to nearby Bermbach or into the Schwarza valley. The famous Rennsteig trail is also not far, so a stay in the Schwarzatal can be combined with hiking on Germany's oldest ridge trail.
From July 17th to 19th, 2026, the Vereinshaus Oberes Schwarzatal in Oelze will be transformed into a festival ground. Live music with a dance band, classic folk festival catering with bratwurst and draft beer, plus the typical atmosphere of a South Thuringian village fair. The Musikverein Oelze organizes the festival on a voluntary basis.
