Cultural and culinary castle night between Schloss Hubertusburg and Altes Jagdschloss — on May 30, 2026 in Wermsdorf
Wermsdorf is a community of 5,000 souls in the Nordsachsen district, about 30 kilometers east of Leipzig. It has two significant castle complexes: Schloss Hubertusburg, built in the 18th century by Augustus the Strong and his successors as a royal hunting lodge, which entered world history with the Peace of Hubertusburg in 1763, marking the end of the Seven Years' War; and the older Altes Jagdschloss, which preceded this magnificent building. Both complexes are located a few hundred meters apart — and once a year, the Schlössernacht connects them into a common festival grounds.
On Saturday, May 30, 2026, the municipality of Wermsdorf, together with Schloss Hubertusburg, invites you to the Schlössernacht. Under the motto 'From Castle to Castle', both complexes will be open, and the area between them will offer a festival program: live music on several stages, food and drinks from regional restaurants, stalls with arts and crafts and regional products, play areas for children, theatrical performances, and guided tours through the castle rooms. The opening of the west wing of the Altes Jagdschloss is a special highlight — a part of the complex, rarely accessible until now, will be presented to the public.
Schloss Hubertusburg is one of the largest hunting castles in Europe and is considered the most important Saxon Rococo building. It was built between 1721 and 1733 under Augustus the Strong and further expanded under his successor Augustus III. Today, the castle houses a clinic, the castle chapel is open to the public, and parts of the main building are used for events. The Schlössernacht offers a rare opportunity to experience the courtyard, the grounds, and selected interiors in atmospheric evening light.
Wermsdorf is located in the Wermsdorfer Forst — one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Saxony. The municipality is characterized by forests, ponds (Wermsdorfer Großteich), and Baroque buildings. It is mainly visited by tourists as a day-trip destination from Leipzig — the Schlössernacht is the annual highlight at which the community publicly celebrates its historical heritage.
The Wermsdorf Schlössernacht 2026 once again connects the municipality's two historic castle complexes into a large festival mile. Special highlight: the opening of the west wing of the Altes Jagdschloss, which has rarely been accessible until now.
A diverse cultural and culinary program for all ages is offered — live music on several stages, regional specialties at food stalls, games and activities for children, theatrical performances, guided tours, and atmospheric lighting of both castle complexes. Feasting, enjoying, toasting, browsing, and playing characterize the evening.
A detailed daily program will be published shortly before the date on hubertusburg-wermsdorf.de and wermsdorf.de.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Food and drinks at the stalls are subject to charge. Guided castle tours are free or for a small fee (approx. €3–5) depending on the format.
