Volksfest weekend with duck race, funfair and fireworks display
Brüel is located in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, nestled between Schweriner See and the Sternberger Seenland. The annual Brüel Open Air on the festival grounds in Schulstraße is one of the traditional Volksfests of the region and attracts visitors from the entire Sternberger Seenland administrative area.
The programmatic centerpiece is the duck race on the Mühlenbach on Saturday morning – a traditional event supported by the volunteer fire department, where numbered rubber ducks are poured from a bridge into the Brüeler Bach and race for victory. In addition, rides and a funfair characterize the festival grounds, while in the evenings, DJ sets and dance evenings create the atmosphere. The weekend culminates in a grand fireworks display, which Mayor Burkhard Liese has announced as "spectacular".
On Sunday, a Simson meeting with a vintage car show follows – a tribute to the GDR moped culture, which is widely established in Mecklenburg. The program is complemented by a town wager, summer party, and morning pint (Frühschoppen). Clubs, traders, and exhibitors from the region participate on the festival grounds with stalls and hands-on activities. Thus, the Brüel Open Air is equally a Volksfest, village event, and family reunion.
The 2026 edition combines three days of Volksfest character with the established program structure of previous years. Starting Friday afternoon, the festival grounds on Schulstraße open with rides, food stalls, and a stage; in the evening, the Summer Party with a DJ kicks off.
On Saturday, the duck race on the Mühlenbach is the highlight – a charming small-town tradition: rubber ducks are poured from the bridge into the Brüeler Bach, and participants hope for the fastest swimmer. This is followed by the town wager, a stage program, and, late in the evening, the announced fireworks display. Sunday concludes with a morning pint (Frühschoppen), the Simson meeting, and a vintage car show – a cozy end to the festivities.
Detailed program and stage artists will be published before the festival on amt-ssl.de. Clubs, traders, and exhibitors can apply to participate.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Rides, food, and drinks are paid for individually on site. For the duck race, numbered ducks are sold at cost price (typical rates for small club lotteries); the proceeds go to the club activities of the Volunteer Fire Department and participating clubs.
By car via the B104 between Schwerin and Sternberg, signposted in Brüel. Parking around the Schulstraße festival grounds. By train to Bad Kleinen or Sternberg, then by bus.
Access to the festival grounds is traditionally free. Rides, food, and drinks are paid for individually on site. For the duck race, numbered ducks are sold – the proceeds go to the club's activities.
Plan your arrival for the fireworks display late on Saturday evening well in advance – the fireworks are a crowd-puller and make parking spaces scarce.
