Historical market spectacle in the Renaissance castle on Open Monument Day — Südharz
Heringen Castle is one of the most impressive Renaissance structures in North Thuringia. The annual Schlossfest transforms the castle courtyard, the castle meadows, and the interior into a three-day festival stage — coinciding with Open Monument Day, which makes the castle known throughout the region. The event is organized by the City of Heringen/Helme in cooperation with the Castle Friends and regional associations.
The program follows a set pattern: Friday evening concert (in previous years, including a Cat Stevens tribute concert at 7:30 PM); Saturday and Sunday historical market spectacle in the castle courtyard with regional and national traders, direct marketers, and medieval craftsmen; Sunday Open Monument Day with castle tours and a musical cabaret show at 8 PM to conclude.
The Sunday of the Schlossfest falls on "Open Monument Day" — the nationwide day of action when historical buildings open their doors to the public. Guided tours of the Renaissance rooms, the castle chapel, and the historical residential chambers are offered at Heringen Castle. The musical stage in the courtyard accompanies the market activities throughout the day.
The small town of Heringen/Helme (around 7,000 inhabitants) is located in the Nordhausen district in the north of the state of Thuringia, on the southern edge of the Harz foothills along the Helme river. The region — the Südharz — is one of Thuringia's most diverse landscapes, with karst topography, caves (Kelle, Heimkehle), and the nearby city of Nordhausen with Germany's oldest preserved double monastery (Walkenried Cistercian Monastery).
The City of Heringen/Helme is planning the Schlossfest 2026 according to the usual pattern — the date and detailed program will be published in the weeks before the festival on stadt-heringen.de. The venue remains Heringen Renaissance Castle. Comparisons from previous years: September 12–14, 2025.
