Traditional local festival with Rose Princess crowning in the Renaissance Castle
If you want to understand what a Heimatfest (local festival) in Saxony-Anhalt can be in the best sense, you should visit Annaburg. The small town in the Wittenberg district – east of Lutherstadt, south of Jessen – has been celebrating its Castle and Local Festival since 1837. The association of the same name, founded in the same year, has been organizing it on a voluntary basis for almost two centuries. In 2026, the 189th edition will take place from June 17th to 21st.
The stage for the festival is the courtyard of Annaburg Castle, a 16th-century Renaissance hunting lodge, once the widow's seat of Electress Anna of Saxony, and later a Prussian military orphanage. It is precisely here that the Annaburg Rose Princess will be crowned on the first evening of the festival – a young ambassador for the town who will represent the festival and Annaburg in the coming year. The crowning ceremony has been the emotional heart of the local festival for generations.
Over five days, various event formats follow one another, which rarely survive in this form elsewhere. The Heimatabend (local festival evening) with an annually changing theme brings together schools, clubs, and the Annaburg Volunteer Fire Brigade on stage – in 2025, the theme was «The incomparable chart show». This is followed by cabaret evenings, a sparkling wine breakfast with the Elbaue musicians, marquee parties with regional bands and DJs, the family program, and on Sunday, the «Heideröschen», the association's children's dance group. A torchlight procession and a grand fireworks display provide the nocturnal highlights.
Annaburg is located in the southeastern tip of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, on the border with Brandenburg. Visitors to the local festival can easily incorporate a day trip to Lutherstadt Wittenberg (UNESCO World Heritage) or the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm. The region is characterized by flat heathland, Elbe meadows, and small castle towns – a piece of Central Germany off the beaten track.
In 2026, Annaburg continues its local festival series – the 189th edition brings the familiar mix of tradition, club life, and marquee culture to the castle courtyard. Opening on Wednesday, June 17th, with the traditional Rose Festival and the crowning of the new Rose Princess – the town's ambassador for the coming year.
Further events include comedy evenings, a new themed Heimatabend (local festival evening), a sparkling wine breakfast with the Elbaue musicians, a torchlight procession, and live band evenings. The "Annaburg Heideröschen" – the association's children's dance group – will perform on Sunday. The detailed program will be announced in spring 2026 via the Heimatfestverein.
